Swayambhunath is an old architectural site on top of a hill in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal. The name is taken from the Tibetan language which means ‘Sublime Trees’ and a great variety of trees are found on the hill. In day to day religious rituals of Buddhist, this stupa has a central place. According to some accounts, it is listed among the most revered Buddhist pilgrimage sites.
For Tibetan Buddhists, Swayambhunath stupa is second to Boudha in terms of reverence. The overall complex comprises of a stupa. a variety of small temples & shrines from the Licchavi period are also part of this historical site. A monastery, library and a museum have only recently been built at this place. Many shops, restaurants, and guest houses can be sited in the locality.
Swayambhunath can be accessed from the eastern and southern direction. The experience of visiting this place is life-changing. Swayambhu means self-created and there is a myth that once this place was filled with an enormous lake which then turned into a valley. Swayambhunath stupa is famous for historical, architectural and religious tourism. It is a must-visit place at least once in a lifetime if you have a craze for architectural and historical sites.
