Boudha Stupa located at a distance of 11 Km from the center of Kathmandu and it is a stupa of massive size. Due to stupa’s large model, it is called one of the largest sphere-shaped stupa in Nepal. It won't be a mockery of truth if one would say that this is one of the largest unique structure of stupa in the world and since 1979 it has been added as a UNESCO world heritage site.
Refugees coming from Tibet in large number had seen the erection of fifty gompas enclosing Boudha Stupa. Due to its majestic size and unique architecture, it is the most visited place in Kathmandu. Ancient route from Tibet leading to Kathmandu will help you in reaching over here. It is in archives of history that Tibetan merchants have offered their prayers in this Stupa for many centuries. Remains of Kassapa Budha also know to be buried here.
History of Stupa is very interesting but mysterious. The Palace of King Licchavi once was standing at the spot where the stupa is now. The king ordered to build a Dhunge Dhara but there was no sign of water. He consulted with the astrologists who recommended the sacrifice of a male having 32 perfections. This was only true for King and his sons. So, he ordered one of his sons to sacrifice him but as the boy sacrificed the king, his head flew. The son, regretfully, then threw a hen from Bajrayogini's top. Later on, he made an absolute decision to construct a stupa, named Khasti, at the place where the hen landed. People had to face the severe drought on next year which they managed by a collection of dew drops. Later on, the government of Nepal renamed Khasti to Boudhanath to show the reflection of Hinduism.
In short, Boudha Stupa is a wonderful place to see. The guide or the local people visiting there would tell you the stories about this place.
