The Manaslu Circuit trekking route combines natural beauty, cultural experiences, and challenging mountain trails. Along the way, you will discover Tibetan-influenced communities, Buddhist monasteries, prayer flags, and traditional mountain lifestyles. Tea house accommodation is available throughout most of the route, making this trek a practical alternative to camping-based expeditions. Before departure, understanding the Manaslu Circuit trek cost, reviewing the Manaslu Circuit trek map, and preparing a detailed Manaslu Circuit trek itinerary are essential for a successful journey. With a licensed guide and the required permits, you can explore this remarkable Himalayan circuit while enjoying Nepal’s pristine scenery, cultural heritage, and unforgettable mountain adventure.

What is the Manaslu Circuit trek like?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is an unforgettable Himalayan adventure that circles Mount Manaslu (8,163 m), the eighth-highest mountain in the world. This 13-day trekking journey takes you through the remote Manaslu region of Nepal, following the Budhi Gandaki River from the lower hills to the spectacular high-altitude landscapes near the Tibetan border. The major highlight is crossing Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), where you can admire panoramic views of snow-covered Himalayan peaks.

Your journey begins at Machha Khola, where the trail winds through terraced farmlands, subtropical forests, waterfalls, and traditional mountain settlements. As you gain elevation, the landscape gradually changes into narrow valleys, pine forests, alpine meadows, glacial moraines, and rugged mountain terrain. You will pass through picturesque villages such as Jagat, Deng, Namrung, Lho, Sama Gaon, and Samdo, experiencing the unique culture and hospitality of local communities along the way.

The Manaslu region is strongly influenced by Tibetan culture, which is reflected in its Buddhist monasteries, mani walls, chortens, prayer flags, and traditional stone houses. You can also explore beautiful side-trip destinations, including Manaslu Base Camp, Birendra Lake, and Pungyen Gompa, depending on your itinerary, acclimatization, and weather conditions. These excursions offer closer views of glaciers, dramatic mountain scenery, and the peaceful wilderness of the Himalayas.

As the trail approaches the Tibetan border, the terrain becomes increasingly rugged, with breathtaking views of Mount Manaslu, Himalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, and other surrounding peaks. Crossing Larkya La Pass is the most challenging and rewarding part of the trek, requiring proper acclimatization and preparation. After enjoying the magnificent mountain panorama, you will descend toward Bimthang and continue through alpine forests and traditional villages to Dharapani, where the Manaslu Circuit Trek connects with the Annapurna Circuit route.

Throughout the journey, you will generally stay in local tea houses, enjoy traditional Nepali meals, and experience the natural and cultural diversity of one of Nepal's most remarkable trekking destinations. With its remote trails, spectacular mountain views, rich Buddhist heritage, and challenging high-altitude pass, the 13-day Manaslu Circuit Trek is an excellent choice for travelers seeking an authentic Himalayan adventure away from Nepal's busier trekking routes.

Who can do the Manaslu Circuit trekking, and How to prepare for this once-in-a-lifetime trek?

The 13-day Manaslu Circuit Trek is ideal for adventure seekers and trekking enthusiasts with good physical fitness, stamina, and endurance. Previous trekking experience is helpful, especially for high-altitude adventures, but beginners who are physically fit and properly prepared can also join. The trek involves walking for around 5–8 hours daily across varied terrain, including forest trails, steep ascents, rocky paths, and glacial landscapes, before reaching the challenging Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters.

To prepare for the Manaslu Circuit Trek, we recommend starting regular exercise and hiking at least 8–12 weeks before departure. Focus on cardiovascular workouts, leg-strengthening exercises, and uphill hikes to build endurance. Pack suitable trekking boots, warm and waterproof clothing, sunscreen, sunglasses, a reusable water bottle, personal medication, and energy snacks. Our team at Adventure Vision Treks will assist you with the trekking arrangements, including a licensed guide, required permits, and accommodation as outlined in the package.

Altitude sickness is an important consideration on this trek because the route reaches elevations above 5,000 meters. Our itinerary allows time for acclimatization, but every trekker responds differently to altitude. Walk at a steady pace, stay hydrated, eat regularly, and inform your guide immediately if you experience a headache, nausea, dizziness, or unusual fatigue. Proper preparation and following your guide's advice will help you enjoy the spectacular mountain views, traditional villages, and unique Himalayan culture along the Manaslu Circuit.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Difficulty

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a challenging high-altitude adventure in Nepal, suitable for trekkers with good fitness, stamina, and determination. The remote location, steep trails, changing weather, and basic facilities add to the difficulty. The biggest challenge is crossing Larkya La Pass (5,106 m), where cold temperatures, high elevation, and snow conditions can make the journey demanding.

During this 13-day trek, you will walk through forested hills, narrow river valleys, rocky paths, landslide-prone sections, and glacial moraines. As you gain elevation, the landscape changes from green lowlands to rugged alpine terrain. Proper preparation, suitable trekking gear, gradual acclimatization, and guidance from an experienced trekking guide will help you manage these challenges.

  • Trek distance: The total trekking distance is approximately 177 km, depending on the exact itinerary and route conditions. The trail includes steady ascents toward Larkya La Pass, followed by a long descent toward the Annapurna region.
  • Daily walking hours: Expect around 6–7 hours of walking per day on average, although some stages may take longer depending on the terrain, altitude, weather, and your pace.
  • Trail conditions: Expect steep ascents and descents, rocky tracks, suspension bridges, uneven paths, and possible landslide debris. Conditions can become more difficult near the pass, particularly in snow or poor weather.
  • Altitude and acclimatization: The trek reaches 5,106 m at Larkya La Pass. Following a suitable acclimatization schedule and recognizing altitude sickness symptoms are essential.
  • Accommodation and facilities: Tea houses provide basic accommodation and meals along most of the route, so camping is generally unnecessary. However, facilities become more limited in remote villages, and trekkers should be prepared for simple rooms, shared bathrooms, and limited connectivity.

Travel insurance for the Manaslu Circuit trek

Travel insurance is essential for the Manaslu Circuit Trek because the route passes through remote Himalayan villages with limited road access and medical facilities. If you experience altitude sickness, an injury, or another medical emergency, reaching a hospital can be difficult and may require a helicopter evacuation.

When purchasing travel insurance for our 13-day Manaslu Circuit Trek, make sure your policy covers high-altitude trekking up to at least 5,500 meters and emergency helicopter evacuation in Nepal. We also recommend coverage for emergency medical expenses, hospital treatment, trip cancellation or interruption, and lost, stolen, or damaged baggage.

Before departure, carefully check your policy exclusions, altitude limits, and rescue procedures. Keep a digital and printed copy of your insurance details with you, and share the emergency contact information with your trekking guide. Having suitable insurance provides financial protection and peace of mind, allowing you to enjoy the spectacular Himalayan scenery with greater confidence.

Manaslu Circuit Trek Permits

The Manaslu Circuit Trek requires three permits: the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP), the Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) permit, and the Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) permit. As the trekking route passes through a restricted area and connects with the Annapurna region, trekkers must obtain the applicable permits before starting the journey.

The permit costs are as follows:

  • Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP): From September to November, the cost is USD 100 per person for the first seven days and USD 15 per person per additional day. From December to August, the cost is USD 75 per person for the first seven days and USD 10 per person per additional day.
  • Manaslu Conservation Area Project (MCAP) Permit: USD 30 per person.
  • Annapurna Conservation Area Project (ACAP) Permit: USD 30 per person.

Best Time to Do the Manaslu Circuit Trek in Nepal

The best time for the 13-day Manaslu Circuit Trek is during spring (March to May) and autumn (late September to November). These seasons generally offer favorable weather, comfortable daytime temperatures at lower elevations, and clear views of the Himalayan mountains. Adventure Vision Treks also organizes off-season departures on request, depending on weather conditions, trail accessibility, and the trekkers’ experience.

Spring (March to May) is an excellent time to explore the Manaslu region. Temperatures gradually rise, forests become greener, and rhododendrons and other wildflowers bloom along the lower trails. The higher elevations remain cold, particularly at night, but the improving weather and beautiful mountain scenery make spring a rewarding season for trekking.

Autumn (late September to November) is another popular season for the Manaslu Circuit Trek. After the monsoon, the skies often become clearer, offering spectacular views of Mount Manaslu and the surrounding Himalayan peaks. The trails are generally favorable for trekking, and you can experience Nepal’s major festivals, including Dashain and Tihar, during this period. However, temperatures drop as November progresses, especially at higher elevations.

Summer and monsoon (June to August) bring heavy rainfall to the lower sections of the route, increasing the risk of landslides, muddy trails, and travel delays. Winter (December to February) brings freezing temperatures and possible heavy snowfall around Larkya La Pass, which can make crossing the pass difficult or unsafe. Although off-season treks may be possible under suitable conditions, they require careful planning and flexibility.

Accommodation and Food During the Manaslu Circuit Trek

During our 13-day Manaslu Circuit Trek, you will stay in local tea houses along the trekking route, so camping is not required. These mountain lodges provide basic accommodation, usually with twin-sharing rooms and shared bathrooms. Our Manaslu Circuit Trek package includes accommodation and three meals a day throughout the trek. We will arrange the best available rooms, prioritizing private bathrooms wherever possible, subject to availability. Single rooms may be available at an additional cost, but they are not available at Larkya Phedi.

Tea houses serve a variety of local and familiar dishes, including dal bhat, momo, thukpa, Tibetan bread, porridge, noodles, pasta, fried rice, soups, and curries. Food choices may become more limited at higher elevations, so we recommend keeping some energy bars, nuts, chocolates, and other favorite snacks in your backpack. You can purchase these supplies in Kathmandu before departure.

Additional services at tea houses, such as hot showers, Wi-Fi, electronic device charging, and extra drinks, generally cost extra. We recommend budgeting approximately USD 15–20 per person per day for these personal expenses, depending on your usage and the availability of services.

  • Drinking water: Boiled drinking water is available at tea houses for an additional charge. You can also refill your bottle and use suitable water purification tablets or a reliable water filter.
  • Snacks: Bring energy bars, nuts, dried fruits, and other lightweight snacks from Kathmandu to maintain your energy during long walking days.
  • Room facilities: Rooms are generally simple, with beds, mattresses, pillows, and blankets. We recommend carrying a suitable sleeping bag, especially for colder nights at higher elevations.

How difficult is the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is a challenging high-altitude adventure that requires good physical fitness, stamina, and endurance. You will walk for approximately 6–7 hours daily across rugged trails, steep ascents, and rocky terrain before crossing Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters. Previous trekking experience is beneficial, particularly for high-altitude adventures, although fit and well-prepared beginners may also complete the trek with proper acclimatization and guidance.

Who will pick us up from the airport?

Our representative will welcome you at Tribhuvan International Airport upon your arrival in Kathmandu. We will arrange a private vehicle to transfer you comfortably to your hotel. Our team will also assist you with the initial arrangements for your Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Do I get internet service during the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

Internet and mobile network coverage are available in some villages along the Manaslu Circuit trail, but connectivity becomes less reliable as you gain elevation and travel deeper into the mountains. Some tea houses offer Wi-Fi for an additional charge, although the connection may be slow or unavailable. We recommend informing your family about limited connectivity before starting the trek.

Can I drink running water on the Manaslu Trek?

We do not recommend drinking untreated water directly from rivers, streams, or mountain springs. Although some sources may appear clean, they can contain harmful microorganisms. During the trek, you can purchase boiled water at tea houses or treat water using purification tablets or a reliable water filter. Carrying a reusable water bottle will help you stay hydrated throughout the journey.

Is crossing Larkya La Pass very difficult for beginner trekkers?

Crossing Larkya La Pass (5,106 m) is one of the most demanding parts of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The ascent begins early in the morning from Dharamsala (Larkya Phedi) and involves long hours of walking over steep, rocky, and potentially snow-covered terrain. High altitude and cold weather can make the crossing more challenging. Beginners should prepare with regular exercise and hiking, follow a gradual acclimatization schedule, and trek with an experienced guide.

Can I do the Manaslu Circuit Trek without a guide?

No. The Manaslu Circuit lies within a restricted trekking area, where trekkers must follow the applicable permit regulations. These include trekking with a licensed guide through an authorized trekking agency and meeting the current minimum group requirements for the restricted-area permit. Adventure Vision Treks can arrange the necessary permits and guide services for your trek.

How do I get from Kathmandu to the Manaslu Circuit?

You can travel from Kathmandu to Machha Khola, the usual starting point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek, by private jeep or local transport. The drive generally takes around 7–10 hours, depending on road conditions, traffic, and the vehicle used. We arrange the transportation according to your package itinerary so you can begin your trek comfortably.

Is the Manaslu Circuit Trek more challenging than Everest Base Camp?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is generally considered more demanding in terms of remoteness, trail conditions, and limited facilities. It involves crossing Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters and walking through less-developed mountain settlements. The Everest Base Camp Trek also presents significant challenges, including high altitude and long walking days. The overall difficulty depends on your itinerary, fitness, acclimatization, and trekking experience.

Is the Manaslu Circuit Trek safe?

The Manaslu Circuit Trek is generally safe when properly planned, but its remote location, high altitude, changing weather, and rugged trails present genuine risks. Trekking with a licensed, experienced guide, following a suitable itinerary, checking weather conditions, and allowing sufficient time for acclimatization can help reduce these risks. We prioritize responsible trekking practices and recommend that all trekkers carry suitable travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency helicopter evacuation.

Do you need a sleeping bag for the Manaslu Circuit Trek?

Yes, we recommend carrying a warm sleeping bag for the Manaslu Circuit Trek, particularly for overnight stays at higher elevations, where temperatures can drop below freezing. Tea houses generally provide blankets, but they may not always be sufficient during cold nights. A sleeping bag suitable for the expected seasonal temperatures will help you stay warm and sleep comfortably throughout the trek.

Day 2: Drive from Kathmandu to Machha Khola (870 m)

After breakfast, we will drive from Kathmandu toward Machha Khola, the starting point of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The journey follows winding highways and mountain roads, passing rivers, terraced farmland, rural settlements, and green hills. As we approach the Budhi Gandaki Valley, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and remote. Depending on traffic and road conditions, the drive takes approximately 7–10 hours. Upon reaching Machha Khola, we will check into a local tea house and rest before starting our trek the following day.

Day 3: Trek from Machha Khola to Jagat (1,300 m)

After breakfast, we begin trekking along the Budhi Gandaki River, following a trail that passes through forested hills, rocky paths, small settlements, and suspension bridges. We will walk through Khorlabesi and the Tatopani area, where natural hot springs can be found, before continuing through narrow sections of the river valley. The trail includes several ascents and descents as we make our way toward Dobhan and Yaruphant. Eventually, we reach Jagat, a traditional stone-built village and an important checkpoint for the Manaslu trekking region. We will spend the night at a local tea house.

Day 4: Trek from Jagat to Nyak (2,300 m)

Leaving Jagat after breakfast, we continue along the Budhi Gandaki Valley toward Philim, a beautiful hillside settlement surrounded by terraced fields and forested slopes. From here, the trail follows rugged mountain tracks through remote villages, narrow valleys, and forested hillsides. As we gain elevation, the landscape gradually becomes more mountainous, with fewer cultivated fields and increasingly dramatic views of the surrounding terrain. We continue toward Nyak, where we will stay overnight in a local tea house, subject to accommodation availability.

Day 5: Trek from Nyak to Namrung (2,660 m)

After breakfast, we continue our journey through the remote Manaslu region, following forested trails and rocky tracks along the Budhi Gandaki Valley. The route passes through small settlements and sections of dense forest, with occasional views of the surrounding hills and river below. As we progress, we begin to notice stronger Tibetan cultural influences in the villages, architecture, and Buddhist traditions of the region. The trail includes gradual ascents and some challenging sections before reaching Namrung, a traditional mountain village with views of the surrounding Himalayan landscape. We will spend the night in a tea house.

Day 6: Trek from Namrung to Syalla (3,520 m)

Today, we continue ascending through the upper Manaslu region, passing traditional villages, mani walls, prayer flags, and Buddhist monasteries that reflect the area's Tibetan heritage. The trail leads through Lho, a picturesque settlement known for its Buddhist monastery and impressive views of Mount Manaslu on clear days. As we climb higher, the forests gradually give way to alpine vegetation, and the surrounding mountains become increasingly prominent. We continue toward Syalla, where the open landscape offers spectacular views of the Himalayan peaks. After arriving, we settle into a tea house and rest for the evening.

Day 7: Trek from Syalla to Sama Gaun (3,527 m)

After breakfast, we enjoy a relatively short trek toward Sama Gaun, one of the largest and most culturally significant villages in the Manaslu region. The trail passes through alpine landscapes and traditional settlements, with magnificent views of Mount Manaslu and the surrounding snow-covered peaks. Upon reaching Sama Gaun, we can explore the village, observe traditional Tibetan-influenced lifestyles, and visit local monasteries if time permits. This village is also an important acclimatization point before continuing toward the higher elevations of the trek. We will spend the night at a local tea house.

Day 8: Trek from Sama Gaun to Samdo (3,874 m)

Leaving Sama Gaun, we follow a trail through open alpine terrain, yak pastures, and scattered settlements toward Samdo, a traditional village close to the Tibetan border. The landscape becomes increasingly dry and rugged as we gain elevation, with spectacular views of the surrounding Himalayan mountains. Although the walking distance is relatively short, the altitude makes it important to maintain a comfortable pace and stay hydrated. After reaching Samdo, we will have time to explore the village and enjoy the peaceful mountain surroundings before spending the night in a tea house.

Day 9: Trek from Samdo to Dharamshala (Larke Phedi) (4,460 m)

Today, we continue toward Dharamshala, also known as Larke Phedi, the final overnight stop before crossing Larkya La Pass. The trail gradually ascends through barren mountain terrain, rocky slopes, and glacial landscapes. Along the way, we cross streams and pass through areas offering impressive views of the surrounding peaks. As we approach Dharamshala, the effects of altitude become more noticeable, so we will walk slowly and take regular breaks. After reaching the settlement, we will rest, prepare our equipment for the early morning pass crossing, and spend the night at a basic mountain lodge.

Day 10: Trek from Dharamshala to Bhimtang via Larkya La Pass (5,106 m)

We begin early in the morning for the most challenging and rewarding day of the Manaslu Circuit Trek. The trail gradually ascends across rocky terrain and glacial landscapes toward Larkya La Pass at 5,106 meters. The climb can be demanding due to the high altitude, cold temperatures, and possible snow or ice, but the spectacular Himalayan scenery makes the effort worthwhile. From the pass, we can enjoy panoramic views of Mount Manaslu and surrounding peaks, including Himlung Himal and Cheo Himal, depending on visibility. After celebrating our achievement, we descend along a long trail toward Bhimtang, passing glacial moraines and alpine landscapes. We will spend the night in a local tea house.

Day 11: Trek from Bhimtang to Tilije (2,300 m)

After breakfast, we leave Bhimtang and begin descending through beautiful alpine landscapes, pine forests, and mountain meadows. The trail offers wonderful views of the surrounding peaks before gradually entering greener terrain at lower elevations. As we continue downhill, we pass through forested sections and small settlements, enjoying the changing scenery along the route. The descent can be demanding on the knees after the previous day's pass crossing, so we will maintain a steady pace and take breaks when needed. By the end of the day, we reach Tilije, where we will stay overnight in a local tea house.

Day 12: Drive from Tilije to Kathmandu (1,400 m)

After breakfast, we leave Tilije and travel by road toward Kathmandu. The journey follows mountain roads through villages, river valleys, and green hills before connecting with the main highway. Depending on road conditions, traffic, and the vehicle used, the drive may take most of the day. Along the way, we can enjoy the changing scenery as we leave the remote Himalayan region and return to the busy Kathmandu Valley. Upon arrival, we transfer to your hotel, where you can relax, enjoy a comfortable shower, and celebrate the completion of your Manaslu Circuit adventure.

Day 13: Departure from Kathmandu

Today marks the end of your Manaslu Circuit Trek. Depending on your flight schedule, you can enjoy breakfast at the hotel or spend some free time exploring Kathmandu before departure. Our representative will transfer you to Tribhuvan International Airport by private vehicle in time for your international flight. We hope you have enjoyed the Himalayan scenery, traditional villages, and cultural experiences of the Manaslu region. Thank you for trekking with Adventure Vision Treks, and we look forward to welcoming you to Nepal again for another adventure.
