Asura Cave is located by the village of Pharping, in the south of Kathmandu. It is a well-reputed destination for the pilgrimage of the Buddhist religion due to the two caves which are attached with Padmasambhava. It is believed that the master Padmasambhava who brought Buddhism to Tibet has attained the highest level of spirituality.
Asura cave is on a peak right above Pharphing coupled with rich ancient history. On the eastern side, you would see Vajrayogini temple. An image of Ganesh and uplifted image of Tara is also placed at the bottom of the western staircase. The Cave Asura which also referred to as Upper Yanglesho is sited in the Wish Fulfilling Tree - Guru Padmasambhava's biography. In the 16th century, Karmapa’s wish and Chokyi Nyima Rinpoche and his father Kyabje Tulku Urgyen Rinpoche developed some area for encircling the cave to house three-year retreatants and other pilgrim guests.
Many of the elders come here in the last days of their lives for nurturing deeper insights and love. Locally this cave is known as Gorakhnath after the name of Nath Sect of Hindu monasticism. Cave has originally 7 statues. Three of them belongs to Guru Padmasambhava and another is of Vajrasattva on the uppermost platform. Padmasambhava is the main statue and brought here by the Tmanag Farmer. Vajrakilaya & Visuddhaheruka places along the right and left of this main statue. A hand-print on the external side of the Asura Cave adjacent to the entrance can also be seen. As per some records, it is an incarnation of Situ Rinpoche while others say that is of Drubwang Tsoknyi II. Many believe because of reverence and faith that it is Guru Rinpoche’s handprint.
In short, the Asura Cave is extremely respectful and important for the pilgrimages and visitors due to its spiritual significance in their lives. A message of love and conviction spread from here.
