Durbar Square Complex in Kathmandu, another World Heritage site also called Hanuman Dhoka square is among the most visited places in Kathmandu. It is good to tell you that many of the cultural centers in Nepal are centered around Kathmandu valley and Durbar Square is a very important place in this regard. Hanuman-dhoka Durbar square name was derived from the statue of Hanuman erected by King Prithvi Malla at the entry of Royal Palace. Durbar Square Complex is encircled by both Buddhist and Hindu temples. Many are constructed in Pagoda style decorated with the carved exterior. As per some records, many of the places dates from the 15th to 18th century.
Durbar Square Complex shows the true cultural and religious values of the valley. Durbar square has mainly two sub-areas. The outer complex is well known for astounding temples Kasthamandap, Jagannath, Kumari Ghar, Big Bell, and Shiv-Parbati Temple. And the inner complex includes Hanuman Dhoka, Mul Choke, Basantapur Durbar, Sundari Choke, and Nasal Choke.
In addition, various cultural activities and traditional festivals held in the square. Major festivals are Gaaijatra, Indrajatra and Machchhindra-Nath Jatra, etc. People throng to such places for witnessing and performing their centuries-old traditions and events. The architectural beauty of the square is unparalleled and this what makes it finest place to visit at its own convenience. Spiritual seekers join here for meditation. Devastating earth-quake in 2015 damaged many ancient temples of Durbar Square Complex due to which various post-earthquake overhauling and reconstruction activities are in progress.
