The first national park which was built in Nepal was Chitwan National Park. Having built-in 1973, it was listed in UNESCO World Heritage sites. It has an area of 952.63 Km square and is situated in Inner Terai lowlands of south-central Nepal. Altitude across the park varies ranging from 180 m to 815 m. Narayani Rapti ravine system forms the natural boundary in north and west. Another park adjacent to Chitwan is Parsa National Park. Bordering on the south with it is the Indian Tiger Reserve Valmiki National Park. As far as the brief history of the park is concerned, Chitwan-Heart of the Jungle- remained a favorite hunting ground for ruling class of Nepal. Feudal camps were set up along the way to the Chitwan due to rough terrain and lack of other facilities. However, until 1963, the conservation law of Nepal was modified to protect the endangered Rhinos in the Chitwan area.
To halt the extinction of Rhinos in 1970, Chitwan National Park was demarcated encompassing an area of 544 Km square which was then expanded later on. Headquarter of the Park is in Kasara. Conservation and breeding centers have been established nearby it. Narayani River system and the vegetation of Himalayan subtropical broadleaf forests cover 70% area of the national park. Moreover, Chir pine and shrub species like rosewood, elephant apple, grey downy balsam, and creepers are many. Seasonal heavy rainstorms and flooding change the landscape sometimes. More than 700 species of fauna being bred by the flora are present in the Park. Prominent faunas are King cobra and rock python snakes starred tortoise, lizards, mugger crocodiles and gharials. 68 mammal species can also be seen here, few of them are Bengal Tiger, Leopards, bears, foxes, wild dogs, jungle cats, golden jackals, rhinoceros, and small Indian civets.
Chitwan National Park is the top most popular tourist destination in Nepal. Tourists enter the park via two main entrances called Sauraha and Meghauli. Tour experience on Jeep Safari will leave you question-less about the beauty and size of the park.
