Manaslu is also called 8th highest mountain, having elevation of 8163 meters, and situated in Nepalese Himalayas. Manaslu which means mountain of the spirit is derived from Sanskrit.
Climbing history of Manaslu peak tells us that it was first climbed over by the Japanese mountaineers in 1956 and Japanese has emotional attachment to this mountain as British has with Everest. Manaslu is considered as highest peak in Gorkha district. Long valley glaciers and ridges offers feasible approach from many directions.
Manaslu region presents various hiking options. Hiking of this circuit was allowed by the Nepali Government in 1991. Salt trading route along the Burhi Gandak River is followed for hiking of this trail. The highest point along the trek to summit the peak is Larkya La. Surmounting of this mountain has seen many fatalities. The Manaslu conservation area has been prepared specifically for the preservation of the demarcated area. Other famous peaks in the region are Ngadi Chuli, Himalchuli, and Langpo. A project with the collaboration of World Bank with Nepali government titled Manaslu Eco-Tourism Development Project is under completion phase. No doubt, this will impetus the flow of tourists to the mighty peak of Manaslu.
