The Teide Observatory is the main observatory in the world investigating solar activity and origin of astrophysics in the Canary Islands can be traced at the Teide Observatory at the beginning of the sixties. Observatory's buildings and telescopes are installed at approximately 2390 m of altitude, covering an area of 50 hectares.
In 1964, first telescopic studies of the Sun began here. Teide Observatory is being operated by Instituto de Astrofisica de Canarias from the very beginning. Telescopes from various countries of the world are placed at this amazing place. Main telescopes are Themis Solar telescope, Gregor Solar Telescope, Solar vacuum Tower telescope, OGS Telescope, Stare Telescope, and IAC-80 Telescope.
Important geographical location coupled with wonderful and perfect sky transparency and astronomical quality has contributed to selecting this place to observe the sun. A number of facilities are there to give services to technical and scientific personnel attached to the Teide Observatory. The observatory has a visitor center also. This center, having a capacity of up to forty people, is used to explain to the school children that how the observatory works and what is the significance of Astronomy in life.
WARNING! The Teide Observatory is for scientists, not for tourists. There's an option to get to observatory other than with an organized tour.
