The Military History of the Canary Islands is best explained by the Historical Military Museum of it. Its more appropriate name is "Regional Military Museum of the Canary Islands". It is located in the Fort of Almedyda, a district of Toscal. It was constructed in the memory of defeat which was suffered by Admiral Nelson when he sought to subjugate Santa Cruz de Tenerife. Museum has a triangular shape. Adjacent to this is Rambla General Franco and Avenida Francisco La Roche.
This place has seen many ups and downs during his construction phase. Its construction had remained unfinished and in the late 19th century it was used as the head of the Coast Artillery Regiment, however, it was previously being used as a fort to guard the coastline of Santa Cruz. Since 1988, it is named the Regional Military Museum.
This historical place is expanded into three areas, the fortress, the interior, and the exterior courtyards. Upon entering the building, you are welcomed by an American M41 Walker Bulldog tank as well as guns from different eras. While on the right side, there are field guns which were used in World War I and II and in the Spanish Civil War. Moving some steps above, the first room has a great collection of small arms which includes rifles, pistols, revolvers, muskets, etc. Inner courtyard has Hercules Canyon, adjacent to which is the walkway and it has also many cannons.
On Ground Flour, there is a good collection from the different Banners of Militias including weapons, firearms and many other war-related materials. The upper floor is accessed by the staircase which is built of beautiful stones. On the top floor, numerous Artillery items are exhibited which includes Antiaircraft and other heavy war machinery equipment. View of the coastline of Santa Cruz de Tenerife can be enjoyed from the top floor. One separate room is designated as a model room in this museum. This room contains models of all the forts which have a history of the defense of Santa Cruz at various times.
There are gardens in front of the building which are equipped with heavy materials, decommissioned helicopters, vehicles, artillery, etc. Information on different Capitanes Generales de Canarias of various eras is also displayed. This museum is solely devoted to those who laid their lives to guard the island and the city.
Opening Timings of this Museum are Tuesday- Sunday: 9 AM to 3 PM and admission is free for the general public. This is an exciting and must-visit place. And if you are planning to visit this place and needs a guide to accompany you, then museum's personnel are there to help you and to bring exciting memories from this historical place in your personal gallery.
