Ho or Dong Ho village is a beautiful conventional town in Hanoi, Vietnam. It is called the birthplace of the well-reputed folk wood carving line. Paintings are related to the spiritual life of the common Vietnamese for decades. Hanoi is at a distance of 33 Km from the village while the south bank of Duon g River is in its proximity. It actually lies in Song Ho Commune, Thuan Thanh District, Bac Ninh Province of Vietnam.
Earlier the paintings were sold for the new Lunar Year and the rural people were used to buy all these paintings. The genesis of these paintings is in the 16th century when these were made manually with utmost zeal, honor, respect, delicacy, and practice. These pictures present a sophisticated look and let us know how refined were those who painted these pictures. In addition to the lovely structure of paintings, folk-style of Dong Ho painting can be seen in the paper & color material. Paper of Dong Ho is called scallop as people crush the relevant shell, mix it with glue. The glue is backed sometimes with tapioca. In the end, pine leaf is used to sweep the paper. Leaf brooms run along sweeping lines with small glittering under the light. It is up to the craftsman if he wants to add some more colors into the paste. Colors being used are purely naturally taken from plants such as from black coal or bamboo charcoal, green from indigo leaves, red from red gravel and yellow from lily, etc. All of these are basic colors and should not be mixed with each other as the Dong Ho Paintings use only four types of colors.
Life of paintings is more than what anyone could expect and it is an attractive item among the many generations of Vietnamese people. Moreover, foreign tourists have also an equal craze for the beauty of these paintings from the Dong Ho Village. Themes of paintings explicitly reflect simple, pastoral and serene life associated with Vietnamese people. Drawings of paintings include chickens, goofers, rats, toads, swinging, wrestling, and buffaloes. These images are painted with clarity, refinement, and purity of heart.
Locals of the Dong Ho Village say that colors have huge role to play in the overall painting, therefore, selection of color must be as per the painting. For instance, the red color is used to represent jealousy, anger, and suffocation of the time. The yellow background is used for joyful life and the light pink is used for peaceful village pictures.
As per the locals and tourism experience, the best time to visit Dong Ho Village is spring and last months of the year. It is best to go there in cold weather conditions. Access to Dong Ho Village is easy, therefore, you can reach there by car, bus or taxi.
