This wine tour in Tenerife will bring you a surprise, so you will learn about traditional winemaking, local limited productions that produce special wines like Malvasia and surely about the history of wines of Tenerife.
Wine connoisseurship, wine degustation and wine appreciation - that's about the island! The 1st wine on the island was produced more than 500 years ago by Fernando de Castro. Right after Spain took control over Tenerife, the history of wine culture was already started on the island. Briefly, in 16th-century wines from the island conquered the European market. The wine Tenerife produced and its success was indisputable and that's confirmed by Shakespeare and Walter Scott, and many other prominent people of that times. 150 years of wine culture was the base of the economy on the island.
These times the island exported huge amounts of Canary wine. The other, Spanish name is Malvasia wine, coming from the name of Malvasia grape. Canary wine was loaded in the only trade harbour of the island in the past, Garachico. Garachico at the same time was the only big town here and the capital of the island. Every year English importers and Spanish winemakers were negotiating the price and signing commercial contracts. Later the barrels were loaded on English and Spanish ships the were sailing to England to unload Canary Islands wine in London. English importers were storing the Canary wine in the Canary Wharf and later on distributing Malvasia wine across England and whole Europe. You will learn a lot of unusual historical facts along your Tenerife wine experience with us.
Why Tenerife wines are unique?
There are a few reasons that makes Tenerife vineyards so different. It is not just about the rough volcanic soil so rich in minerals giving an exceptional taste for grapes.
Come to Tenerife and generally Canary Islands if you want to taste the same wines that people were drinking in Europe centuries ago.
Why is that so?
Well, you probably heard about the fact Spanish settlers brought a lot of different kinds of grapes from Southern Europe right after they have colonized Canaries 550 years ago. There were grape plants of various species from Spain, Portugal, Italy and Greece. And they were doing well on the rich volcanic soils of Canary Islands.
You probably also know about the Great French Wine Blight. In the middle of 19th century a parasite insect commonly called a Grape Phylloxera came to Europe from the North America. Since it was a new and completely unknown treat for European winemakers they were not prepared and had no solutions to fight the Grape phylloxera.
The parasite caused disaster in Europe. Different sources from those times informing us that even over 40% of vineyards were completely destroyed by the Grape phylloxera. Winemakers and governments in Europe have been using many different ways to fight the parasite, including pesticides, but nothing worked. The Grape phylloxera was marching in Europe destroying more and more vineyards.
The remedy that saved Europe came again from the USA by the method called grafting. By grafting with native American grape plants that are resistant to Grape Phylloxera all traditional European species of grapes simply disappeared and replaced with hybrids, a mix of American and European grape species.
And here we are coming to the amazing fact you will discover in Tenerife wineries. The Grape Phylloxera haven't reached Canary Islands. Therefore all the original, historical and native European species of grapes were simply preserved on the islands. Moreover, with a hundreds of years a lot of those different kinds of grapes developed to a unique species thanks to a very specific soil and weather conditions.
That's why we say you must try wine tasting Tenerife offers to feel the same taste people in medieval Europe felt drinking the 'drink of the Gods'. On your vineyard tour Tenerife will be discovered by you from a completely less known side.
What wines you taste along the Tenerife vineyard tour?
Nowadays winemaking on the island is not a big industry simply because of the territory size makes impossible an industrial production. Local producers and almost every Canary island vineyard are more concentrated on keeping traditional technologies of producing smaller series of 500 to 5000 bottles.
The Lagar de Chasna Tenerife winery is managed by a passionate owner and the winery producing a variety of exclusively 100% organic wines. That includes both white and red wines, dry, sweet, semi-dry and semi-sweet. The most iconic kinds of grapes growing on Tenerife vineyards are:
- Listan Blanco - the one you will try along the wine tasting Tenerife experience. This is a perfect grape almost every winery Tenerife has uses to produce mostly white wines with a natural fruity tones.
- Listan Negro - another one a very traditional kind of grape used to make both white and red wines and you will taste them on your Tenerife vineyard tour.
- Moscatel - a grape that often used by many Canary island vineyards to create a specific aromatic tastes mixing it with other species.
- Malvasia - a historical, iconic one you simply MUST TASTE and you have to try it on any of wine tours Tenerife offers.
Five Tenerife regions and their grapes
Island has 5 wine regions formed with a different climates and soils. That's why even the same drink produced from the same grape may taste totally different. Main island's wine regions are:
- Ycoden-Dauta-Isora - located on the west part of the island is characterized by a warm semi-dry climate.
- Abona - takes the southern part and having often dry semi-desert climate, even it's a very different in the lower parts just above Los Cristianos and Playa de Las Americas and upper parts in the Vilaflor area. Here's the best wine tasting Tenerife South offers. And our Wine tasting Tenerife tour takes place in the Abona region at the highest winery of all the Spain and Europe.
- Valley of Guimar - on the eastern corner. Valley de Guimar is similar to the Abona region, but with a bit cooler climate.
- Tacoronte-Acentejo - famous for its red wines, on the Northern coast, with the sub-regions like El Sauzal, Tacoronte, Acentejo. In this area you can find the only bigger a kind of industrial vineyards Tenerife have. Here are also many bodegas like bodegas Monje that are able to receive visitors.
- Valley of La Orotava - known for its more humid and mild climate, the nearest one to Mediterranean summer.
The other regions is possible to discover with a private wine tasting trip to get even more experiences.

But we recommend going wine tasting Tenerife if you are dedicated to the process, not the result itself. This trip was about listening to the stories and getting to know people who enjoy their little craft. Hide review

It seems I already know each word of a guide by heart. However, every year that I come here, they offer something new for this trip. For example, I was glad to find out they have opened a wine glass shop where you can buy some souvenirs in the form of a lovely wine ware set. My husband would definitely like it. And Malvasia tastes delicious from them. The old-time classics will never get old. Unlike me hahah. But I am glad you can now do such wine trips on Tenerife. They didn’t have them back then, but now everything is more accessible for tourists. Hide review
