9-Day Rwanda Gorilla Trekking, Golden Monkey & Cultural Experience

DAY 1: ARRIVAL IN KIGALI AND TRANSFER TO HOTEL

Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by your Virunga Ecotours driver-guide and transferred to your hotel in Kigali.

Relax and prepare for your upcoming adventure exploring Rwanda’s wildlife, landscapes, and cultural heritage.

DAY 2: TRANSFER TO MUSANZE & CULTURAL IMMERSION EXPERIENCE

After breakfast, depart Kigali for Musanze, located near the magnificent Virunga volcanoes.

Upon arrival, visit a local community project for an authentic cultural exchange experience. Participate in traditional cooking, learn about local farming practices, enjoy a meal prepared together with community members, and discover traditional banana beer production.

Continue to a local homestay where you will experience Rwandan hospitality, learn about local traditions, and enjoy an evening sharing stories with community members.

DAY 3: GOLDEN MONKEY TRACKING & TWIN LAKES EXPERIENCE

After breakfast, head to Volcanoes National Park for golden monkey tracking.

Explore the beautiful bamboo forests of the Virunga mountains while searching for these unique and playful primates in their natural habitat. After the trek, enjoy lunch before visiting Lake Burera and Lake Ruhondo, two scenic crater lakes surrounded by volcanic landscapes.

Return to your lodge for dinner and overnight.

DAY 4: MOUNTAIN GORILLA TREKKING & COMMUNITY VISIT

After an early breakfast, transfer to Volcanoes National Park headquarters in Kinigi for your mountain gorilla trekking adventure.

With experienced park guides, enter the forest in search of a habituated gorilla family. Spend a memorable hour observing these incredible primates in their natural environment, an experience considered one of Africa’s most unforgettable wildlife encounters.

In the afternoon, visit the Kagano community to learn about local history, conservation, and the relationship between communities and Volcanoes National Park.

DAY 5: MOUNT BISOKE VOLCANO HIKE

After breakfast, depart for Mount Bisoke, one of the iconic volcanoes of the Virunga mountain range.

The hike takes you through different vegetation zones, including bamboo forests and high-altitude ecosystems, ending at the beautiful crater lake on the summit.

The hike usually takes between 5 and 7 hours depending on fitness level and weather conditions.

DAY 6: COMMUNITY EXPERIENCE, VILLAGE WALK & TRADITIONAL KNOWLEDGE

After breakfast, enjoy a community-based experience around Musanze.

Walk through local villages near the volcanoes, meet community members, visit beekeepers, and learn about traditional practices and local livelihoods.

This experience provides insight into everyday life in Rwanda and the connection between communities, culture, and conservation.

DAY 7: CULTURAL EXPERIENCE & TRANSFER TO LAKE KIVU

After breakfast, visit a local community initiative and learn about Rwanda’s culture and development journey.

Later, depart for Gisenyi, located on the shores of Lake Kivu. Enjoy a scenic boat trip on the lake, explore the lakeside town, and experience the beautiful landscapes of western Rwanda.

DAY 8: LAKE KIVU LEISURE & TRANSFER TO KIGALI

Enjoy a relaxed morning at Lake Kivu. Take time to appreciate the scenery, relax by the lake, or enjoy optional activities before transferring back to Kigali.

Arrive in Kigali and spend your final evening in Rwanda.

DAY 9: KIGALI GENOCIDE MEMORIAL VISIT & DEPARTURE

Depending on your flight schedule, visit important historical sites in Kigali, including the Kigali Genocide Memorial, to learn about Rwanda’s history, remembrance, and journey of reconciliation.

After the visit, transfer to Kigali International Airport for your departure flight.
