The Great Rift Valley and Maasai Mara Camping Safari

Day 1: Lake Elmenteita

Your safari adventure begins with a morning departure from Nairobi, traveling north along the dramatic escarpment of the Great Rift Valley. The drive offers breathtaking views of the valley floor dotted with volcanic hills, acacia woodlands, and traditional farms.

Arrive at the peaceful shores of Lake Elmenteita, a hidden gem known for its scenic beauty and rich birdlife. This alkaline lake is part of the Rift Valley Lakes UNESCO World Heritage Site and often hosts large flocks of flamingos and pelicans.

After settling into your campsite, enjoy an afternoon exploring the lakeshore where zebras, gazelles, and giraffes are often seen grazing. As the sun sets over the Rift Valley, relax by the campfire and enjoy your first night in the African wilderness.

Day 2: Lake Nakuru

Enjoy a morning and afternoon game drive through the park’s diverse habitats. The park is home to both black and white rhinoceroses, Rothschild’s giraffes, lions, buffalo, and numerous antelope species.

Stop at the dramatic viewpoint of Baboon Cliff for sweeping views of the lake and surrounding forests before continuing south through the park.

Later in the day, arrive at the beautiful campsite near Makalia Falls, where a small waterfall flows through rocky cliffs and lush vegetation.

Day 3: Lake Borgoria

After breakfast and a short morning game drive, depart for the northern Rift Valley and the remote landscapes surrounding Lake Bogoria.

Lake Bogoria is famous for its spectacular geothermal features. Along the lakeshore, steaming vents and erupting geysers send jets of hot water high into the air. The lake also attracts huge numbers of flamingos, creating one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles in the Rift Valley.

Spend the afternoon exploring the hot springs, observing birdlife, and enjoying the stark beauty of this unique environment.

As evening approaches, settle into camp for dinner beneath the clear Rift Valley sky.

Day 4: Maasai Mara

After an early breakfast, begin the scenic journey south toward the world-famous Maasai Mara National Reserve. The drive passes through rural Rift Valley landscapes, local markets, and traditional Maasai pastoral lands.

Arrive in the Maasai Mara in the afternoon and set up camp before heading out for your first exciting game drive. The reserve forms part of the vast Serengeti ecosystem, one of Africa’s most important wildlife regions.

Your afternoon drive offers the chance to see elephants, giraffes, zebras, and predators such as lions and cheetahs roaming the open savannah.

Day 5: Maasai Mara

Today is dedicated to a complete immersion in the extraordinary wildlife of the Maasai Mara National Reserve — one of Africa’s most celebrated safari destinations.

The day begins at sunrise, when wildlife activity is at its peak. As the golden light spreads across the savannah, predators such as lions and cheetahs are often still active from their night hunts. This is the ideal time for photography and witnessing authentic predator-prey interactions.

After the early game drive, you will return to camp for breakfast and some rest as you wait for the afternoon game drive. Alternatively you can carry packed lunch and head out for an extended game drive and enjoy a picnic lunch at a designated site.

Day 6: Drive to Nairobi

Early morning game drive (optional). After breakfast, return to Nairobi with drop-off at hotel or airport.
