Parque Eduardo VII is the biggest and most impressive park in Lisbon that is situated north of Avenida da Liberdade and the Marquis of Pombal Square. It takes up 26 hectares and filled with beautiful landscapes and different panoramas, so a tourist will definitely find something for their taste. Originally, the park was called Parque da Liberdade (The Liberty Park).
However, after the royal visit of English king Eduard VII with the aim of strengthening the diplomatic relationship with Portugal, the park was renamed in his honor. The design of the park was the responsibility of Keil do Amaral and is structurally divided into three parts - the bush part and two panoramic garden areas. The first in the list is probably the most photographed part of Parque Eduardo VII. With its geometrically cut hedges, it's reminiscing of the closely cut hedge labyrinths in popular royal houses.
Overlooking the hedges stands the monument built in honor of Marquis de Pombal who made a great contribution to the restoration of Lisbon after the destructive earthquake in 1755. Another reason to visit is that the park is built on the highest hill in the city. Thus, the top part of it serves as an incredible viewpoint. From up here, you can see the impressive panorama of Lisbon, Tagus River, and Arrábida mountains, as well as catch the glimpse of São Jorge Castle! Walking through a variety of landscapes with statues scattered across them, you should visit the well-known tourist attraction of estufas (greenhouses).
There are three of them in the Parque Eduardo VII - two hothouses and one cold house. The first two are meant to preserve the exotic species from warm countries, featuring waterfalls and banana trees. The cold house, Estufa Fria, is a shelter for plants originating in cold countries. In Parque Eduardo VII, you will also find a gorgeous sports Carlos Lopes pavilion. Built-in 1922-23 as an exposition, it was intended to celebrate and commemorate Brazil Independence. Later, it was opened in the park itself in 1932 and was titled The Exhibitions Palace. Nevertheless, after Carlos Lopes' victory of Portugal's first gold medal in the Olympics, the pavilion was renamed. Inside, Pavilhão Carlos Lopes is decorated with a traditional stunning azulejo mosaic, created by Jorge Colaço. After being dilapidated for a while, it was renovated and reopened in 2017.
Now, the annual bookfair in Lisbon is held here in the first half of June! So, if you happen to be in Lisbon, don't forget to stroll through Parque Eduardo VII - it will amaze you with its landscape variety and especially greenhouses!
