Herdade da Comporta is a special magnificent resort in the south of Lisbon on the Alentejo coast. Although compared to many lush resorts, it doesn't look like any of them due to being very different from each one. The territory of Herdade da Comporta is a real estate consisting of 12,500 hectares of land. The main characteristic of the estate is its unique variety of landscapes - here you will find everything from dunes and beaches to salt marshes and swamps.
Hence, one of the primary objectives of Herdade da Comporta's keepers is to preserve the natural heritage of the area and look after each plot of land. Existing architecture is deliberately made of natural materials in order to perfectly blend into the landscapes. For example, here you can witness specific projects like Casas Na Areia, where the boho rooms feature sandy floors or try to search for wooden huts amongst the pines!
Here, about 3,500 permanent inhabitants live in peace and quiet in villages of Pego, Carvalhal, Brejos, Torre, Possanco, Carrasqueira and Comporta. However, during summer the number of residents increases dramatically. Herdade da Comporta can offer a few activities to try in your leisure time there. First of all, bird watching. Being located within the borders of Sado Estuary, the resort is home to more than 200 species of birds! The most popular ones are, most probably flamingos - the pink long-legged stars of Sado's banks are pacing around imposingly and looking at visitors.
Another interesting and historical place to attend is the Rice Museum (Museu do Arroz), located at the entrance of Comporta village in the old rice husking factory. Rice cultivation is crucial to the history of Herdade fo Comporta since in the early days it was originally farming and fishing villages. The rice paddies are still looked after to this day. Herdade da Comporta can also boast its wines which are manufactured here according to the traditional recipes. Grapes, grown in the sandy soil vineyard of 35 hectares in the mild Mediterranean climate, later on, are turned into award-winning wines like Parus, Comporta, Herdade da Comporta, Chão das Rola, etc. You can see the cellar and taste them in local restaurants - Museu do Arroz, Comporta Café, Ilha do Arroz, Restaurante dos Pescadores, Restaurante SAL.
So, if you're seeking refuge from busy urban life, come to Herdade da Comporta and enjoy the diversity of landscapes of the territory, once called "the last Wild West of Europe"!
