With the construction of the first hotel on the mountain in the 1850s and the railway in the 1880s, the Pilatus became a tourist center. 1] From Kriens, the mountain can be reached all year round with the cable car built in the 1950s. The steepest cog railway in the world, the Pilatus-Bahnen AG, runs up the mountain from Alpnachstad from May to November. The mountain can also be reached on foot.
