The Pilatus is a mountain in the Swiss cantons of Nidwalden and Obwalden. The mountain overlooks the Vierkantonsee and is part of the Uri Alps. With the construction of the first hotel on the mountain in the 1850s and the railway in the 1880s, the Pilatus became a tourist center. 1] From Kriens, the mountain can be reached all year round with the cable car built in the 1950s. The steepest cog railway in the world, the Pilatus-Bahnen AG, runs up the mountain from Alpnachstad from May to November. The mountain can also be reached on foot.
