SowetoTour

Soweto Tour is about the forceful moving of Blacks from Johannesburg to an area away from from the city in the late 1930s. A chair of non-European affairs in the city council initiated the naming of Soweto in in 1949 after a competition to give a collective name to townships dotted around the South-west of Johannesburg. The city council settled for SOWETO which is an acronym for South Western Townships. It became internationally famous after the June 1976 students uprising that were sparked by the introduction of Afrikaans language as a medium of instruction in African Schools. The riots were violently suppressed by the apartheid authorities that killed 176 students and more that a thousand injured. It is the largest township in the country with more than 2 million residents.

We start at an upmarket part of Soweto called Diepkloof Extension. This township was established in the 1980s and it is one of a handful townships in Soweto that was not built by the apartheid government. The residents here are mostly professional people such as doctors, lawyers, teachers, nurses and business men and women.

We drive through Orlando East towards Orlando West where we visit Mandela's house, now a museum and proceed to The Hector Petersen memorial which is about the students uprisings. We then visit The Regina Mundi Cathedral, a church with special place in the history of Soweto. The tour includes a visit to The Freedom Square, squatter camp and the 3rd largest hospital in the world with 3,400 beds opened 1942 for convalescing British and Commonwealth soldiers.
