Wilcacocha is a lake in the Black Mountain hills of western side Huaraz, ideally located and providing a spectacular view over the Huaylas Valley and the mountains of the Cordillera Blanca. One of the best treks to start your acclimatization to altitude
Pick-up from your hotel at 9:00am and drive for about 8 km south Huaraz by the paved highway for about 15 minutes, drop-off at the Santa Cruz bridge then across the Santa River to start our steady walk-up. Along the way we can observe the Andeans lifestyle in the small settlements - often saying hello of the inhabitants. After about 2 1/2 hours walk, we get the Wilcacocha Lake (3700 m/12.000 ft). it offers here a fantastic view of the Cordillera Blanca.
The partially with reed plants overgrown the lake is habitat for wild ducks and other waterfowl. After a walk around the lake and taking pictures for about two hours, we continue our hike and return in about one and half hours back to the starting point. At the bridge the vehicle waits for us and brings us back to the hotel in Huaraz
