Overview
The Upper Dolpo trek is an extraordinary journey into Nepal’s most remote and culturally preserved region. It combines stunning landscapes, rich Tibetan culture, and challenging trails, offering a trekking experience like no other. If you seek adventure, isolation, and spiritual discovery.
Highlights
Description
Since Upper Dolpo is a restricted area, trekkers need to acquire a Restricted Area Permit (RAP), which costs USD 500 for the first 10 days and an additional USD 50 per day beyond that. Additionally, a Trekking Information Management System (TIMS) card and a Shey Phoksundo National Park permit are required.
Trekkers must be part of an organized group with a licensed trekking agency, and an experienced guide is mandatory for navigating the challenging terrain and handling any unforeseen issues. Solo trekking is not allowed in this region due to safety concerns.
The best seasons for the Upper Dolpo trek are spring (April to May) and autumn (September to November). During these months, the weather is more stable, and the views of the snow-capped peaks and valleys are spectacular. Winter brings heavy snowfall, making the passes impassable, while the summer months are affected by the monsoon rains.
Accommodation along the Upper Dolpo trek is basic. Trekkers usually stay in tea houses or camp, especially in the more remote sections. Meals typically consist of simple, locally sourced food, with dal bhat (lentil soup with rice) being the staple. It is advisable to carry some extra snacks, as options can be limited.
Given the remoteness and high altitude of the trek, excellent physical fitness is crucial. Trekkers will spend extended periods above 4,000 meters, so acclimatization is essential to avoid altitude sickness. Daily trekking can range from 5 to 8 hours, depending on the trail conditions and weather.
To start the trek, travelers must first fly from Kathmandu to Nepalgunj, and then take a connecting flight to Juphal, the starting point of the trek. The remoteness of this region means that flights can sometimes be delayed due to weather, so flexibility in your schedule is recommended.

Itinerary
Flight Kathmandu-Nepalgunj :
From Kathmandu, we will catch the scenic flight to Nepalgunj that takes over just an hour to finally reach there. Nepalgunj is a hot place, where the malarial mosquitoes are ubiquitous. Most of the lodges in Nepalgunj are infamous of the bed bugs, except the few lodges. So, it is better not to expect any heavenly views from Nepalgunj. However, by the time you enter into the Dolpo region, the Himalayan vistas begin to show-off.
