Overview
A moderate 8–9 day trek in Nepal's remote far-west, combining a flight to Dhangadhi and days of forest and meadow walking to Khaptad National Park's sacred plateau — home to the Khaptad Baba Ashram. Low altitude (max ~3,000m), light on crowds, and best done in spring or autumn.
Highlights
Description
Tucked away in Nepal's remote far-western hills, the Khaptad National Park Trek offers a rare escape from the crowded trails of Everest and Annapurna, taking travelers instead into a quiet, untouched sanctuary of dense forest, rolling meadows, and deep spiritual significance. Spanning the districts of Bajhang, Bajura, Achham, and Doti, Khaptad National Park remains one of the least-visited protected areas in the country, offering a softer, greener alternative to the rugged high-altitude expeditions Nepal is best known for.
The journey begins in Kathmandu with a short domestic flight to Dhangadhi in the Terai lowlands, followed by a long, scenic drive up into the hills to Silgadhi, the administrative hub of Doti district. From here, the trekking proper begins — a multi-day ascent through terraced farmland, traditional villages, and progressively thicker forest, climbing through pine, oak, fir, and rhododendron as the trail gains elevation via waypoints like Baglek, Jhigrana, and Bukipani. The landscape shifts noticeably along the way, opening eventually into Khaptad's signature high-altitude meadows, locally known as "Patans" — vast, open grasslands rarely seen elsewhere on Nepal's trekking circuit.
At the heart of the trek lies the Khaptad plateau itself, home to the revered Khaptad Baba Ashram, where a Hindu sage lived and meditated for decades, along with sacred sites such as Khaptad Lake, the Triveni confluence, and the Sahasralingam shrine. A full exploration day here allows time for guided nature walks, birdwatching (the park hosts an exceptional range of species), visits to the pasture at Ghodedhawan, and — on a clear day — distant views of the Api and Saipal Himalayan ranges. The return journey retraces the same trail back to Silgadhi and Dhangadhi before flying back to Kathmandu.
At a maximum altitude of roughly 3,000 meters, the trek carries a low risk of altitude sickness, making it accessible to beginners and travelers with only moderate fitness, provided they're prepared for 4–7 hours of daily walking, some steep stone-stepped sections, and genuinely remote conditions — basic teahouse lodging, simple meals (largely dal bhat, noodles, and tea), and limited access to cash machines or modern conveniences once past Dhangadhi. Best undertaken in spring (March–May), for blooming rhododendrons, or autumn (September–November), for stable weather and clear mountain views, the trek suits nature lovers, cultural travelers, and spiritual seekers alike — anyone drawn to solitude, biodiversity, and a more contemplative pace of travel rather than dramatic peaks or crowded basecamps.
What's included
Itinerary
Day 1: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m)
You'll land at Tribhuvan International Airport, where a representative meets you and transfers you to your hotel in Kathmandu. The rest of the day is unstructured — enough time to shower off the flight, wander through Thamel's market lanes, or visit a nearby heritage site like Boudhanath or Swayambhunath if energy allows. In the evening, your guide sits down with you for a pre-trek briefing: gear check, weather outlook for the far-west, and a walkthrough of the days ahead. Overnight in Kathmandu.
Day 2: Fly to Dhangadhi, drive to Silgadhi (1,330 m)
An early transfer to the domestic terminal for a roughly 1 hour 20 minute flight to Dhangadhi, down in the flat Terai near the Indian border. From there it's a long road day — 6+ hours by private jeep, climbing out of the plains into the switchbacks of the Doti hills. The scenery changes fast: paddy fields give way to terraced slopes, pine-covered ridgelines, and small roadside bazaars. You'll roll into Silgadhi, the administrative headquarters of Doti district, by early evening. Overnight in Silgadhi.
Day 3: Trek Silgadhi to Jhigrana via Baglek (2,300 m) — approx. 7 hrs
This is where the actual trekking starts. After breakfast, the trail climbs steadily out of Silgadhi through terraced farmland and scattered villages toward Baglek (2,160 m) — about 3.5 hours of walking, timed to land you there for a trailside lunch. The afternoon leg to Jhigrana is another 3.5 hours through thickening forest, with locals often working the fields as you pass. Jhigrana also marks the Khaptad National Park boundary/entry checkpoint. Overnight in a lodge or tent camp at Jhigrana.
Day 4: Trek Jhigrana to Bukipani via Bichpani (3,080 m) — approx. 6–7 hrs
The forest thickens and gains real character today — chir pine giving way to oak, fir, hemlock, and rhododendron as you gain altitude. It's about 4 hours to Bichpani Dharmasala (a pilgrim rest-house at roughly 3,020 m), where you stop for lunch, followed by another 2.5 hours to Bukipani. The trail alternates between gentle forest paths and short, steep stone-stepped stretches. If you're trekking in April or May, this stretch is when rhododendron blooms — deep red and pale pink — carpet the hillsides, and the air carries the scent of blossoming Badu trees. Bring binoculars; this belt is thick with birdlife. Overnight at Bukipani.
Day 5: Trek Bukipani to Khaptad (3,010 m) — approx. 2 hrs
The shortest and easiest walking day of the trip, and deliberately so — it's built as a light morning so you arrive with the whole afternoon free. The trail opens out of forest into Khaptad's signature "Patans," rolling high-altitude meadows unlike anything else on Nepal's trekking circuit. After lunch at the park headquarters, you can walk out to Khaptad Daha (Khaptad Lake) and visit Khaptad Baba's Ashram, the forest hermitage of the sage after whom the park is named. Overnight at Khaptad.
Day 6: Full-day exploration of Khaptad National Park
A full day with no packs on your back. The classic loop covers Khaptad Baba's Ashram, the Triveni confluence, Sahasralingam Mandir (a cluster of stone shivalingas considered sacred by Hindu pilgrims), and Nag Dhunga. In the afternoon, most itineraries head up to Ghodedhawan, the largest pasture inside the park — wide open grassland framed by forest, and on a clear day you can pick out the distant snow of the Api and Saipal ranges to the north. The park holds real biodiversity credentials: over 280 recorded bird species and more than 20 mammal species, plus several hundred documented plant species. Overnight at Khaptad.
Day 7: Trek back to Jhigrana via Bichpani — approx. 7 hrs
Retracing the outbound route, but it reads differently in reverse — descending through the same rhododendron-oak-pine forest gives you a second look at terrain you moved through quickly on the way up. It's a full day, roughly mirroring Days 3–4 combined into one longer push back down to Jhigrana. Overnight at Jhigrana.
Day 8: Trek Jhigrana to Silgadhi via Uditola (1,790 m) — approx. 5 hrs, then drive to Dhangadhi
A final downhill trekking day, dropping back through Uditola village to Silgadhi — this closes out the walking portion of the trip. From Silgadhi, you transfer by road back down to Dhangadhi, retracing the long drive from Day 2 in reverse, arriving by evening. Overnight in Dhangadhi.
Day 9: Fly Dhangadhi to Kathmandu, departure
A short flight back to Kathmandu in the morning. Depending on your onward international flight time, you'll either have a few hours free in the city for last-minute shopping or a farewell meal, or head straight to the airport for your departure flight.
