22 Day Bali Sumbawa Guided Motorcycle Tour in Indonesia

Selamat datang di Indonesia (Welcome to Indonesia)

An adventurous motorcycle trip that should be on everyone's bucket list. The start starts on “The island of the gods”, Bali (Canggu).

At the beginning and end of this trip you will be enchanted by the many temples, often in magical landscapes with breathtaking rice terraces, majestic mountains and tropical beaches. The very friendly premises make you feel right at home and together with the delicious Indonesian food you won't want to leave.

Lombok is the second island we cross and is fast becoming popular with tourists in addition to Bali, after all the beaches here are divinely beautiful and the interior is overwhelmingly impressive with its beautiful rice fields around the volcanic Rinjani mountain range.

The island of Sumbawa is less known and is therefore still unspoilt and purely authentic. a pleasure to drive on the deserted roads here that meandering connect many small villages. at every stop you will immediately feel the hospitality of the Sumbawanese.

In addition to visiting various impressive temples and the many rice terraces that we will see, the unexpected highlights are mainly what happens along the way. You can easily witness a local ceremony of both a wedding and a funeral. Or being spontaneously invited to people's homes for a cup of coffee.

Day 1: Arrival - Canggu (Bali)

Upon arrival in Bali you will be met by your driver and then taken to the hotel in Canggu by taxi. Here you can rest from the journey and possibly take a dip in the hotel swimming pool, with beautiful views over Echo Beach, which is within walking distance. The hotel is located among the rice fields and has several cozy cafes/restaurants as well as small boutiques in the area.

Day 2 Canggu (just relax)

One more day in Bali to relax by the hotel pool or by the sea with its white sandy beaches and high waves, which is ideal for the many surfers who come here.

Day 3: Canggu - Munduk

After a good night's sleep and breakfast, we will have a briefing. Then we prepare for the first ride through the countless rice fields and terraces of this tropical island. We then depart on our journey, ditching the city crowds for scenic rice fields and terraces as we ride on narrow paths through small villages and the green hills of southwest Bali. We make a brief stop on the beach and then ride north. The entrance into the mountains = of Bali has many small trails that show us the most beautiful corners of this tropical island. After a local lunch in Pupuan we ride further on and off road up the mountains and then arrive in Munduk. The hotel has a beautiful view over the mountains and valley and enjoying a refreshment in the infinity swimming pool makes it taste even better.

Day 4: Munduk - Sidemen

After breakfast we ride back into the mountains towards Buyan Lake, where we will stop to enjoy the view. Then we quickly leave the crowds behind us and ride on narrow roads through various villages where the locals stare at us to see Western tourists on a motorbike. We then start the winding climb of Mount Gunung Batur.. Before we reach the top, we turn off and ride through wooded areas and narrow paths towards the old volcanic crater where we will conquer the hard black lava sand with our enduros. For lunch we ride back up to the crater rim and with a breathtaking view of Lake Batur and the highest mountain in Bali Gunung Agung in the background, we enjoy our meal. After lunch we prepare for the last part of the day's ride. We will descend windingly towards the town of Sidemen, known for its spectacular rice fields/terraces. While enjoying a drink on the terrace in front of your house, you can reminisce about this day while enjoying the view over the rice

fields.

Day 5: Sidemen - Kuta (Lombok)

Unfortunately we have to leave this special place behind us and take a winding route through the rice fields and later a quite steep descent with great views over the Bali Sea towards the port. Here we will cross to Lombok by ferry (about 4 hours). In the afternoon, after we have left the ferry, we ride via the back roads of South Lombok through various kampungs where the locals search for gold towards the south coast. These winding roads over the hills of Blongas, Bremi and Pandaleman and overlooking the Indian Ocean, take us to the surfing paradise of Kuta (Lombok) where we spend the night. Kuta is a friendly, relaxed place with several small eateries. Kuta Beach is within walking distance of the hotel.

Day 6: Kuta - Maluk (Sumbawa)

Today we ride further along a breathtaking coastal road to the east, where salt is extracted from seawater in the traditional fashion. The town of Keruak is the center of the region, where people from all over the area come for the market. We ride further along the coastal road to the north, to take the ferry at Labuhan Lombok (1 hour) that takes us to Sumbawa. Immediately after leaving the ferry, we have a simple but delicious local lunch. With a full belly we now ride further down the west coast and leave the main road to arrive near Maluk, where our small-scale hotel is located. This is the perfect place to chill right on the beach with a spectacular sunset, and we will light a fire for a delicious BBQ. Maluk has hardly any tourism, except for a few surfers, so you will experience pure Sumbawa here.

Day 7 Maluk - Sumbawa Besar

Today we ride the southwestern part of the island. There has been a lot of work paving asphalt here for a number of years and there is now a generally beautiful winding road through wooded and mountainous areas. We will make a few exits to ride unpaved through the few villages here and go to the beach to enjoy the rough sea. We will of course have a simple but delicious local lunch along the way. After all, the Indonesians know how to handle herbs and spices. We then ride north via the main road. Despite being a main road, there is little traffic. The asphalt is also of poor quality, so you sometimes spend more time ride off-road than on-road. We spend the night in the capital called Sumbawa Besar. We stay at a good hotel with western standards, excellent beds and air conditioning. For dinner we go into town, where we will prepare a kind of homemade buffet. We are going to try many different dishes that we will enjoy family-style so you can taste the many different flavors and dishes. We will also enjoy the meal with a beer, of course.

Day 8: Sumbawa Besar - Bima

A long trip in kilometres is planned for today. In the morning the route goes along the azure coast with the island of Moyo in the background. Ride through various villages on well-paved roads with many beautiful bends, we will first climb the mountain pass of Doro Wero in the afternoon and then arrive in Bima via Dompu. We spend the night in the middle of Bima, opposite the local covered market.

Day 9: Bima - Labuan Bajo (Flores)

The alarm goes off at 5:30 am and by 6:30 am, when the sun is just rising, we are already on the motorbike to go via the Doro Daria mountain pass towards Sape where we will take the ferry in the morning to cross to Flores. This crossing takes approximately 7 hours.

In Labuhan Bajo we spend the night in a well-maintained hotel against the slope with a view of the Flores Sea. In the center you can enjoy a drink and/or meal with a view of the harbor and the many sailing boats at anchor.

Day 10: Labuhan Bajo - stay (Komodo Islands)

This day is going to be rather special: we are taking a boat (the type of boat depends on the size of the group) to visit the island of Rinca. We explore this island park and enjoy a walk with amazing views of Flores while we observe the (still) wild buffalo and the Komodo dragons. On the way back we still have time to go snorkelling. The Komodo archipelago has several unique species of fish, and this national park has UNESCO Heritage Site status because of its marine biodiversity.

Day 11: Labuhan Bajo – Bajawa

After breakfast we pack the bikes again and enjoy climbs of various mountains and hills throughout today's stage. The area you ride through is very green, quiet and one bend follows another. After lunch in Ruteng, we ride via the mountains Ranaka, Leda, Lobobutu and the Sawu Sea, to Bajawa.

Day 12: Bajawa – Moni

In the morning we will first visit the traditional Ngada village. mountains Then we alternate between the mountains and coastal road towards Ende before ending up in the small town of Moni. Nearby are the three colour lakes of Kelimutu.

Day 13: Moni - Riung

If you want to see the three colour lakes at sunrise, you have to get up at 3:30 am and ride the 12 kilometre mountain road in the dark with your motorbike! Then you must walk about 30 minutes to finally arrive at 1640 meters and enjoy the sunrise and the 3 lakes with their unique colours. After breakfast you ride to Riung, which is located in the north. This part has a different landscape and is pretty barren, especially during the dry season. The middle part of this day is a road of lesser quality but still doable.

Day 14: Riung – stay (17 Islands Marine Park)

You will stay an extra day in Riung to admire the 17 Islands Marine Park on a fishing boat. This protected area is unknown to tourists and very quiet. You can go snorkelling in a number of places and for lunch you will eat a BBQ fish on one of the tropical uninhabited islands.

Day 15: Riung - Ruteng

Via the northern coastal road, small parts of which are still unpaved, we ride all alone through the fascinating landscape of North Flores. Occasionally we ride through a remote village where the locals will stare at us because foreigners with motorcycles pass by. The last two hours of the route are paved and mountainous with the breathtaking rice terraces that this region, called Manggarai, has to offer.

Day 16: Ruteng - Labuhan Bajo

When we leave Ruteng, after about half an hour we turn off the main road and head inland towards Labuhan Bajo. You will be amazed at how many villages we encounter along the way, despite the fact that the main road and the city are far away. Many roads here have recently been paved, but not all roads yet and that makes this day even more special. We spend the night again in the same hotel as last time in LB.

Day 17: Labuhan Bajo – Bima (Sumbawa)

The ferry goes to Bima in the morning and in the afternoon we ride through mountainous areas to arrive at the hotel. The hotel is close to the market, which is definitely worth a visit.

Day 18: Bima – Sumbawa Besar

We leave Bima and after less than an hour's ride we turn off to explore the surroundings of Kilo. Ride along the coast, the road quickly becomes a dirt road and soon nothing more than a dirt path. We ride through a number of villages, where the locals will look at us with their mouths open and the children will wave enthusiastically at us.

In the afternoon we ride again on a well-paved coastal road to Sumbawa Besar. There are no bikes today, but instead today is a day of choice for you to relax, stroll around the surrounding area or swim in that natural landscaped pool at the hotel.

Day 19: Sumbawa Besar – Bayan (Lombok)

After three hours of coastal road, we take the ferry to Lombok. Then we will ride the northern coastal road of this island. There is very little traffic in this part, so we can fully enjoy the scenery with Mount Gunung Rinjani in the background and the azure blue sea on the other side. Our overnight stay is in Bayan. At 600 meters against Mount Rinjani, overlooking the coastline, we will stay in a wooden cottage with a thatched roof, between the rice terraces. A naturally landscaped swimming pool gives us a direct view of the surroundings and the restaurant. The Indonesian as well as the Western food is very good. The extensive breakfast and the very friendly owners will ensure you have a very pleasant stay.

Day 20: Bayan (Rinjani volcano waterfalls)

Today is again a day without the motorbikes, but instead we enjoy a 4-hour guided jungle walk through the rice fields and small rivers to arrive at two beautiful waterfalls. Here we can try to feel the force of the falling water, so we recommend you bring swim trunks.

Your hostess at this small resort will pamper you these two days with delicious dishes and an extensive breakfast.

Day 21: Bayan – Sanur (Bali)

We ride further down the coastal road towards the south. The last ride on Lombok encompasses small roads and passes through various villages to arrive at the harbour where we will sail to Bali. After the ferry trip, we ride directly to our hotel in Sanur.

Day 22 Sanur departure

Unfortunately, the suitcases have to be packed again and you can still do the last shopping before you leave. Most flights depart in the afternoon, so you can relax on the beach or by the pool.
