Hien Luong Bridge is at the Ben Hai River on Highway number 1 in the Demilitarized zone of Vietnam. The bridge is connecting the Huan Hoa Commune and Hien Luong Commune. The bridge is hardly 10 kilometers away from the Cua Tung Beach. Before the construction of the bridge, the river was wide and the ferry was the only mode of transport for the commoners.
However, it was in 1928 when the Vinh Linh authority decided to construct a two meters wide bridge made of the steel frame on the river to make the life easier for pedestrians. French colonialists renovated the Hien Luong Bridge again in 1931 but still, it was insufficient for heavy means of transport. Then in order to ease the transportation for the light traffic, the bridge was re-modified and made available for the small transport. Later on, French-built another bridge able to carry at least 10 Ton weight but it could survive for only two years as the guerilla forces blown it once again.
Then again, the Hien Luong Bridge was re-constructed in 1952 and then in 1972 but due to war situation, it has to collapse by the bombing of opponent forces. Huong Luong Bridge served as an epitome of National Division, instead of serving the purpose of connecting point b/w the two different parts, it has divided the country further. Those who crossed the bridge to go into the north were tortured and put into humiliating deaths. The US forces destroyed the bridge during the war which clearly depicts that it always wanted to divide the nation and was not interested in Unifying it. There are many war times memorial near the bridge that can be seen by the visitors. High stacks speakers are fixed on the steel racks nearby bridge. These speakers were used for propaganda war during the war. Many other tunnels and victory celebration signs are also displayed near the bridge which should be captured by the camera.
