Highlights
Description
A 3-day budget safari in Murchison Falls National Park with rhino tracking offers one of Uganda’s most complete wildlife experiences—combining classic savannah game drives, a dramatic Nile river setting, and the rare chance to see all of the “Big Five.”
The park itself is Uganda’s largest and most diverse protected area. It stretches across rolling savannah plains, Borassus palm forests, riverine woodland, and the mighty Nile River, which cuts through the landscape before exploding through a narrow 7-meter gorge at the iconic Murchison Falls. The sound, mist, and power of the falls create one of East Africa’s most dramatic natural spectacles.
Game viewing here is excellent. The northern sector’s open plains are home to large herds of elephants, buffalo, Rothschild’s giraffes, Uganda kobs, hartebeest, and waterbuck. Lions are often seen lounging in the grass or scanning for prey, while leopards may be spotted resting in acacia trees. Hyenas, jackals, and a wide variety of birdlife add to the richness of the experience.
One of the highlights of a 3-day budget safari that includes rhinos is a visit to Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. Since rhinos are not currently found inside Murchison Falls National Park, Ziwa provides a safe and controlled environment for tracking southern white rhinos on foot. Walking through the bush with a ranger, quietly approaching these massive animals at close range, is a powerful and intimate wildlife encounter that contrasts beautifully with vehicle-based game drives.
Another unforgettable element is the boat safari along the Nile. As you cruise upstream toward the base of the falls, you pass enormous pods of hippos, massive Nile crocodiles basking along the banks, and elephants coming down to drink. Bird enthusiasts are often rewarded with sightings of species such as the African fish eagle and the rare shoebill stork in nearby wetlands.
The overall atmosphere of the safari is both adventurous and serene—early mornings filled with golden light over the savannah, afternoons on the river surrounded by wildlife, and evenings listening to distant animal calls under vast African skies. Accommodation ranges from budget lodges overlooking the Nile to comfortable mid-range and luxury lodges , all offering immersion in the wild setting.
In just three days, this safari delivers dramatic scenery, diverse ecosystems, close encounters with iconic wildlife, and the unique opportunity to track rhinos on foot—making it one of Uganda’s most rewarding short safari experiences.

Day 1: Transfer & Rhino Tracking Experience
Your safari begins with an early morning departure from Kampala or Entebbe (around 6:00–7:00 AM). The drive north takes approximately 4–5 hours through rural towns and countryside landscapes.
Mid-morning, you will arrive at Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary, the only place in Uganda where you can see wild rhinos. Here, you’ll enjoy a guided walking safari to track white rhinos on foot. An armed ranger leads the experience, sharing insights about rhino conservation and behavior. The walk usually lasts 1–2 hours and offers excellent photography opportunities.
After lunch at the sanctuary restaurant, continue the journey toward Murchison Falls National Park, entering through the southern gate. Enjoy scenic views as you proceed to your lodge for check-in.
If time allows, take a short evening game drive to spot giraffes, elephants, antelopes, and possibly lions before returning to the lodge for dinner and overnight.
Begin the day with an early breakfast before heading out for a sunrise game drive on the northern bank (Paraa sector), the park’s prime wildlife viewing area.
During the drive, you may encounter:
The early hours are best for predator sightings and photography.
Return to the lodge for relaxation and lunch.
In the afternoon, take a boat safari along the Victoria Nile to the base of Murchison Falls. This 2–3 hour cruise offers close views of large pods of hippos, Nile crocodiles basking on the banks, elephants drinking at the shoreline, and abundant birdlife. The boat stops near the bottom of the falls, where you’ll witness the Nile forcefully squeezing through a narrow 8-meter gorge before plunging down in a dramatic display.
Return to the lodge for dinner and overnight stay.
After breakfast, visit the top of Murchison Falls. Here you will experience the thunderous roar and mist as the Nile crashes through the narrow gorge. The viewpoint offers spectacular photo opportunities and panoramic views of the surrounding landscape.
After this highlight visit, begin the return journey to Kampala or Entebbe. You may stop for lunch in Masindi town along the way.
