Machame route is a 7 or 6 days camping trail that leads to the summit, the route is also known as the whiskey route and considered the most popular route. Although it can be tackled in 6 days it is highly advised to be done in 7 days for better acclimatization.
The path can be accessed from Moshi town and almost 50% of all Kilimanjaro climbers opt for the route. In just six or seven days you will get to experience different climatic conditions, from rainforest passing along alpine meadows, moorland, high desert and finally arctic zone. Each day on this route presents its unique ecosystem.
The route starts from south west side of the mountain and traverses around to the south east side which gives people a chance to sleep at the same altitude for three consecutive nights which strongly assist the altitude acclimatization.
The challenging part of the hike is the barranco wall, a steep cliff face that can look intimidating on the first approach, although barranco isn’t truly as scary as it may appear, with the help of your professional guide the part is easily climbed, and the incredible view at the top makes it worth the effort.
The route is designed for physically fit people with some hiking experience, but with good preparation and a good supportive team even first time trekkers use the route and do just fine.

A Short drive from Moshi to machame gate which will take 50 minutes; passing along the beautiful village of machame. After check in formalities at the gate, we will start hiking going through the montane forest, making our way to machame camp

Elevation: 5,380ft -9,350ft
Depart from our camp after breakfast and proceed hiking through the forest. We will keep trekking as we soak in the beautiful scenery along the way, making our way through the moorlands. The route will diverge to west side onto a river gorge. Dinner and overnight will be offered at shira campsite.
Elevation: 9,400ft to 12,500ft

Time to be used: 4-6 hours
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner
On this day we will depart from shira plateau and proceed eastwards up a ridge, moving through the intersection towards the peak of kibo. We will keep hiking and change our direction to the south east towards lava tower. Shortly after the tower we approach the second intersection which leads to the arrow glacier at an altitude of 16,000ft. There after we descend to barranco hut at altitude 13,000ft, where we will spend overnight. The day offers amazing scenery and ends up at almost the same altitude as when we started which provide the best acclimatization opportunity

DAY 4
BARRANCO CAMP- KARANGA CAMP -BARAFU CAMP
Depart from barranco camp immediately after breakfast and start a short hike to barranco wall which will take about an hour, the view at the top is incredible from here we will proceed to barafu hut. We will rest and take an early dinner at barafu camp as we prepare for summit. kibo and mawenzi peak are clearly visible here.

DAY 5
BARAFU CAMP (15,331ft) -UHURU PEAK (19,341ft) - MWEKA CAMP (10,065ft).
Around midnight you will be woken up to start our trek to the summit. This part is more challenging compared to the other parts of trekking. After packing snacks we will start trekking to the summit between the rebman and ratzel glaciers through heavy scree up to Stella point on the crater rim.
After reaching stella point we will take a short break and stare at the most beautiful sunrise you are ever likely to see (weather permitting), from there we might encounter snow all the way up to the summit. After reaching the highest peak in Africa, take as many pictures as you can and indulge in your victory, your time here will be brief to avoid altitude sickness.
Start your descent to mweka hut campsite, making a stop at barafu camp for lunch, the trail is a bit rocky and can be harmful to the knees so trekking poles can be helpful here, after reaching the camp we will have our last dinner on the mountain and get some rest.

DAY 6
MWEKA CAMP (10,065ft) -MOSHI
This will be the last day of our trekking and we will begin it after having a tasty breakfast in the camp, our trek to the mweka gate will take about three hours. After reaching the gate you will be awarded with a gold certificate for successfully reaching the summit after that we will head to mweka village and meet our driver who will take you back to your hotel for a long well-earned rest.
