Highlights
Description
The 5-Day Marangu Route on Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the most popular trekking routes to reach the summit of Africa’s highest mountain. Often called the “Coca-Cola Route,” it is the only route that provides comfortable mountain huts instead of tents, making it a good choice for climbers who prefer a bit more comfort during their adventure.
The journey begins at Marangu Gate in the lush rainforest on the southeastern side of the mountain. Trekkers hike through dense forest filled with giant ferns, colobus monkeys, and unique bird species before reaching Mandara Hut for the first overnight stay. The next day the trail climbs above the forest into the moorland zone, where the landscape opens up with spectacular views and unusual plants like giant lobelias as you head toward Horombo Hut.
On the third day climbers continue ascending through the alpine desert toward Kibo Hut, located at the base of the summit cone. This area offers dramatic views of both Mawenzi Peak and the massive slopes of Kibo. After resting in the evening, the summit attempt begins around midnight.
The summit push is the most challenging part of the climb. Trekkers slowly ascend in the dark toward Gilman’s Point, then continue along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa at 5,895 meters. Watching the sunrise from the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro is an unforgettable experience.
After celebrating at the top, climbers descend back to Horombo Hut for the night and then continue down through the rainforest to Marangu Gate the following day.
This route is ideal for climbers looking for a shorter itinerary, hut accommodation, and a well-established trail, though the 5-day schedule is physically demanding due to limited time for altitude acclimatization. Many climbers choose it for its clear path, comfortable huts, and classic Kilimanjaro trekking experience.
