Description
Experience the breathtaking journey to the summit of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s highest mountain, on the classic 5-day Marangu Route. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu offers a scenic and relatively direct approach through Kilimanjaro’s diverse landscapes, from lush rainforest to alpine desert and the dramatic summit zone.
Your adventure begins in the beautiful rainforest of Kilimanjaro, where you’ll walk beneath towering trees and have the chance to encounter the mountain’s unique wildlife. As you gain altitude, the landscape gradually changes to open moorland, giant heather, and volcanic terrain, eventually leading into the stark alpine desert surrounding the summit.
One of the distinctive features of the Marangu Route is its accommodation in mountain huts, providing a more sheltered experience than camping routes. Each day, your experienced mountain crew will guide you at a steady pace, allowing your body to gradually adjust to the increasing altitude.
The highlight comes on summit night, when you begin your ascent toward Uhuru Peak (5,895 m). Under a star-filled African sky, you’ll make your way toward the summit before sunrise. Reaching Uhuru Peak is an unforgettable achievement, rewarded with spectacular views across the surrounding landscape and the deep satisfaction of standing on the Roof of Africa.
After celebrating your summit success, you descend through the mountain’s beautiful landscapes and return to the Marangu Gate, where your Kilimanjaro adventure comes to an end.
What's included
Itinerary
The 5-Day Marangu Route is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and is often known as the “Coca-Cola Route.” The route approaches Kilimanjaro from the southeast and takes you through several spectacular ecological zones, from lush montane rainforest to open moorland, alpine desert and the glacial summit zone.
Unlike most Kilimanjaro routes, Marangu provides accommodation in mountain huts, making it a comfortable option for trekkers who prefer sleeping indoors rather than camping.
This 5-day adventure takes you from the rainforest at Marangu Gate to Uhuru Peak (5,895 m), the highest point in Africa. Although the route is straightforward in terms of terrain, the rapid altitude gain makes it physically demanding. Walking slowly, staying hydrated and following your guide's acclimatization advice are essential.
Elevation: 1,860 m – 2,720 m
Distance: Approximately 8 km
Walking time: 3–5 hours
Habitat: Montane Rainforest
Accommodation: Mandara Hut
Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer to Marangu Gate, where you complete registration and meet your mountain crew. The trek starts through the beautiful montane rainforest, following a well-established trail beneath tall trees and dense vegetation.
The forest is alive with birds and, occasionally, glimpses of monkeys. As you gradually gain altitude, the vegetation begins to change and the forest opens into the moorland zone.
After several hours of walking, you arrive at Mandara Hut, your first mountain camp. Relax and enjoy your surroundings while your crew prepares dinner.
Overnight: Mandara Hut
Elevation: 2,720 m – 3,720 m
Distance: Approximately 12 km
Walking time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
After breakfast, you leave Mandara Hut and continue toward Horombo. The trail gradually leaves the rainforest behind and enters the open moorland zone, where giant heather and distinctive Kilimanjaro vegetation dominate the landscape.
As you climb higher, views of Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks begin to appear when the weather is clear. The changing scenery makes this one of the most rewarding sections of the route.
You continue at a steady pace toward Horombo Hut, located beneath the dramatic peaks of Kilimanjaro.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Elevation: 3,720 m – 4,703 m
Distance: Approximately 9 km
Walking time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert
Accommodation: Kibo Hut
Today you enter the high-altitude alpine desert. The vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as you cross the Saddle, a broad stretch of volcanic terrain between Kibo and Mawenzi Peaks.
The trail is gradual but the increasing altitude makes the day more challenging. Your guide will encourage you to maintain a slow, controlled pace — “pole pole” — to conserve energy for the summit.
You arrive at Kibo Hut in the afternoon and have an early dinner before resting. Prepare your summit equipment and try to sleep, as your final ascent begins during the night.
Overnight: Kibo Hut
Elevation: 4,703 m – 5,895 m – 3,720 m
Distance: Approximately 22 km
Walking time: 12–15 hours
Habitat: Alpine Desert / Arctic Zone
Accommodation: Horombo Hut
Summit Day — the ultimate Kilimanjaro experience.
You wake around midnight and begin your ascent in darkness. The climb toward Gilman's Point (5,681 m) is slow and demanding, with steep sections of loose volcanic scree.
After reaching Gilman's Point on the crater rim, you continue around the rim toward Stella Point (5,739 m) and then along the crater rim toward the summit.
Finally, you reach Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres, the highest point in Africa.
Take time to celebrate this incredible achievement and enjoy the breathtaking views from the Roof of Africa before beginning your descent.
You descend to Kibo Hut for a short rest and refreshments before continuing down toward Horombo Hut.
Overnight: Horombo Hut
Elevation: 3,720 m – 1,860 m
Distance: Approximately 20 km
Walking time: 5–7 hours
Habitat: Moorland / Montane Rainforest
After breakfast, you begin your final descent through the moorland and rainforest zones. The lower you descend, the greener and warmer the mountain becomes.
You eventually arrive at Marangu Gate, where you complete the exit procedures and receive your summit certificate if you successfully reached the required summit point.
Your vehicle will be waiting at the gate to transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi.
End of your 5-day Kilimanjaro adventure.
