Description

6-day Kilimanjaro Marangu Trek

The Marangu Route, also called the “Coca-Cola Route,” is one of the most popular ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It’s loved for being comfortable, accessible, and full of amazing scenery. Unlike other routes that require camping, Marangu offers mountain huts with beds and warm meals, making it perfect for those who want a mix of adventure and comfort. Over six days, you will hike through changing landscapes, from lush rainforest at the base to open moorlands, alpine desert, and finally the icy summit of Uhuru Peak, Africa’s highest point.

Your journey begins in Moshi, a lively town at Kilimanjaro’s foothills. From there, you’re transferred to Marangu Gate, where the climb officially starts. The first hours take you through dense rainforest, alive with birdsong, rustling leaves, and playful monkeys. It’s a gentle and refreshing start that helps your body and mind adjust.

As you climb higher, the forest opens into vast moorlands with wide views of the surrounding peaks. The steady pace lets you acclimatize while enjoying the peaceful landscape and unique plants. Beyond the moors, the alpine desert awaits, with rocky plains and volcanic sands. The air becomes thinner and cooler, and the scenery feels almost otherworldly. Crossing the Saddle, between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks, offers unforgettable wide-open views.

The final summit push starts very early, often around midnight, taking you to Uhuru Peak. Watching the sunrise from Africa’s highest point is a once-in-a-lifetime experience-soft pink skies, clouds below, and breathtaking mountain views.

Throughout the climb, professional guides and porters support you, carry equipment, prepare meals, and share insights about the mountain and local culture. They make your journey safer, easier, and more enjoyable.

The Marangu Route isn’t just a hike, it’s a journey of personal growth, reflection, and connection with nature. Each day brings new landscapes and memorable moments. By the time you return to Moshi, you will take home not just photos but a story of achievement and the thrill of standing on top of Africa. It’s perfect for anyone who wants a comfortable, safe, and unforgettable climb.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Horombo Hut

Accommodation: Horombo Hut (bunk beds, shared bathrooms)

Day 3: Horombo Hut → Horombo Hut (Acclimatization Day)

This day is for rest and acclimatization, which helps your body adjust to higher altitudes and improves your chances of reaching the summit. You can take a short hike to Zebra Rocks or Mawenzi Valley, explore the surroundings, and enjoy the peaceful mountain views.

Meals: Breakfast, lunch, and dinner at Horombo Hut

Accommodation: Horombo Hut (bunk beds, shared bathrooms)

Day 4: Horombo Hut → Kibo Hut (4,700m)

After breakfast, you continue your climb into the alpine desert. The landscape changes to rocky plains and volcanic sands. You’ll cross the Saddle, a wide-open space between Mawenzi and Kibo peaks. Accommodation: Kibo Hut (bunk beds, shared bathrooms)

Day 5: Summit Day – Kibo Hut → Uhuru Peak (5,895m) → Horombo Hut

The most challenging day begins around midnight. You hike slowly under the stars with your headlamp. First, you reach Gilman’s Point (5,681m), then continue to Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. Watching the sunrise from the top is unforgettable. After photos and celebration, you descend back to Kibo Hut for rest, then continue down to Horombo Hut for a well-earned sleep.

Accommodation: Horombo Hut (bunk beds, shared bathrooms)

Day 6: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → Moshi

On your final day, you descend through the moorlands and rainforest back to Marangu Gate. The descent takes 5–6 hours and is more relaxed than the climb. At the gate, you sign out, receive your summit certificate, and are transferred back to Moshi for a shower, a meal, and a sense of accomplishment.

Meals: Breakfast at Horombo Hut, lunch on the trail
