Day 1: Rongai Gate to Simba Camp
- Elevation: 1,387m/915m to 2,750m
- Distance: 7 km
- Hiking Time: ~3 hours
- Habitat: Montane Forest
Start your trek from Nale Moru village, passing through lush rainforest. The trail is easy and offers a chance to see wild animals like elephants and buffalo before reaching Simba Camp for an overnight stay.
Day 2: Simba Camp to Mawenzi Tarn via Kikelewa Tarn
- Distance: 16 km
- Hiking Time: ~9 hours
- Habitat: Semi-Desert
A long but rewarding hike, with a rest stop at Kikelewa Tarn for a hot lunch. Arrive at Mawenzi Tarn Camp in the evening, surrounded by the rugged beauty of Mawenzi Peak. Rest, dinner, and overnight.
Day 3: Mawenzi Tarn to Kibo Huts Camp
- Elevation: 4,330m to 4,695m
- Distance: 5 km
- Hiking Time: ~5 hours
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
Cross the lunar desert of the saddle between Mawenzi and Kibo Peaks to reach Kibo Huts, where you’ll prepare for the summit ascent. Early rest to get ready for the challenging climb ahead.
Day 4: Kibo Huts to Uhuru Peak to Horombo Huts
- Elevation: 4,695m to 5,895m (Uhuru Peak) to 3,690m
- Distance: 5 km ascent, 15 km descent
- Hiking Time: ~5 hours to summit, 6+ hours descent
- Habitat: Alpine Desert
Summit push starts at midnight to reach Uhuru Peak before or after sunrise. The final stretch via Gilman’s Point offers breathtaking views of Kilimanjaro’s crater and ice caps. After celebrating at the summit, descend to Kibo Huts for lunch and continue down to Horombo Huts for overnight rest.
Day 5: Horombo Huts to Marangu Gate to Arusha/Moshi
- Elevation: 3,690m to 1,830m to 1,387m
- Distance: 18 km
- Descending Time: 5-7 hours
After breakfast, descend through moorland and rainforest, stopping at Mandara Huts for lunch before reaching Marangu Gate. Sign out and transfer back to Moshi/Arusha for certificate presentation and celebration!
