Description
Castelo Branco Creative City
Its history dates back to Roman times, when it was known as Castra Leuca, but it was in the twelfth century that it received its first charter and began to grow around the castle. The Garden of the Episcopal Palace is one of the ex-libris of Castelo Branco and one of the most beautiful examples of the Baroque Portuguese. It was built by Bishop João de Mendonça in the eighteenth century, as part of his episcopal palace. The garden consists of five levels decorated with stone sculptures, fountains, ponds, and flower beds. The Cathedral of Castelo Branco is the main church of the city and the seat of the diocese of Castelo Branco. It was built in the 16th century over an old Romanesque church from the 13th century, which in turn was built over a Muslim mosque. The cathedral has a simple façade, with a Renaissance portal and a niche with the image of Our Lady of Mercy
