Itinerary

  1. Visited Places:
  2. Cala Paguro
  3. Lama Monachile
  4. Grotta Palazzese
  5. Scoglio dell'Eremita
  • Cala Paura: In this cove is the famous 'Torno Subito' (I'll be right back) inscription with wrought iron letters set into the rock. Apparently the work of an Iranian sculptor visiting Polignano, but it is not known who the artist was referring to.
  • Grottone: Immediately after Cala Paura we find Grottone. In the second half of the 1800s, this place was home to one of Polignano's first bathing establishments. The cabins were apparently fixed on a dense system of wooden stilts. The tufa wall separating Grottone from Cala Paura was probably built in the same period
  • Lama Monachile: Lama Monachile is Polignano's postcard. It is the most photographed beach, the first stop visitors reach once they arrive in the town. n the 15th century it was Polignano's commercial port. Looking at Lama Monachile from the sea, on the left you can see the cliffs of the Bastione di Santo Stefano. On the right, instead, the cliffs host large steps at the top of which there is a bronze statue dedicated to Domenico Modugno. There is a small cave accessible from the blade, the exit of which can be seen from the sea: La Grotta della Piana. It is a kind of rocky tunnel.
  • Grotta azzurra:The Blue Grotto is located below Bastione Santo Stefano. It is so called because of the play of light that occurs between the sea water, the sun and the rocks, which gives the cave its blue colour.
  • Grotta dell’Arcivescovado :is very large, and is right underneath the houses of the town's ancient core, still standing and partly inhabited today. It is said to be the last of several smaller caves starting from the Bishop's Palace, and that in the past this network of tunnels was useful for escaping during enemy raids.
  • Grotta Palazzese: Grotta Palazzese is the best known, also thanks to the restaurant of the same name, which has now achieved worldwide fame. In the early 1700s, the Marquises of Leto, feudal lords of Polignano, included this cave among their family possessions, such was (and is) its beauty. In the 1920s, this cave housed a magnificent bathing establishment. There are two caves in the cave, a smaller and a larger one, and the smaller one also houses a pebble beach. It is, according to many, the most beautiful cave in Polignano.
  • Grotta Ardito:The overland access to this cave was excavated at the behest of priest Giuseppe Ardito, right under his own house, back in 1824. One of the most recognisable elements of this cave is the natural limestone column, called the Column of Hercules.
  • Grotta delle monache :It is said that the nuns from the nearby Civil Hospital in Piazza Sant'Antonio used to come here to bathe. In order to be able to bathe away from prying eyes, it seems that the nuns themselves had a narrow set of steps built that led from the cliff into the cave. Today, however, these steps are no longer practicable.
  • Grotta Stampagnata: To understand the name of this cave, however, one has to resort to the Polignano dialect. In dialect, in fact, the expression 'senza tompagno' is used to indicate a structure without a roof.
  • Scoglio dell’eremita: The hermit's rock is also called Isolotto di San Paolo or, by the older Polignanesi, Isola di Sant'Antonio. It is just over 100 metres long, half as wide and not far from the coast. There are many legends about the islet: there is the one about a monk who fled from the East having lived there, the one about a pilgrim returning from the Holy Land, and the one about the preacher who travelled around Apulia spreading the Gospel and decided to move to the Scoglio. All we know for sure is that in 1612 fishermen built a chapel there dedicated to St Anthony Abete, a hermit saint. In 1837 there was a cholera epidemic and the little church became a lazaret. It was later destroyed. In 1901, a group of missionaries fixed the iron cross in the rock that we can still see today on the Scoglio. A further legend concerns Monopoli, the nearest town to Polignano (in a southerly direction): it seems that the people of Monopoli were so envious of the rock that they tied it to a donkey with a rope in order to pull it away from Polignano and bring it towards them. Obviously, the donkey failed, and so the rock remained the property of Polignano.
  • Port’Alga :Continuing southwards from the Scoglio dell'eremita, one notices natural pools of brackish water, a small cove and a larger one with moored goiters. Here is Port'alga. A fisherman has written at the entrance 'Port of the sea and happiness'. Here you will find the famous half-gozzo in which there is a small bookshop where you can take or leave books. It is located to the right of the main cove, high up on the rocks. Apparently, a small religious community lived here in the 1400s and settled in caves carved into the walls of the blade.
  • Grotta dei colombi : The cave of the pigeons is one of the largest caves on the Polignano coast, but above all one of the most interesting. It is divided into three parts and it appears that there are also other underground caves connected to it. There are four openings in the vault of the cave and one of them has been located 150 metres inland! Remains of pottery, flints, and prehistoric animal bones were found inside.
  • Grotta soprannominata “degli innamorati” : This cave is the last one you visit before turning back and travelling all the way along the coast again. It is so called because at some point during the day, apparently at 1.20 p.m., the sun passes through the hole in the roof and casts a heart-shaped shadow on the rock of the cave.
