Description

Selinunte Park

The Selinunte Archaeological Park, with an extension of approximately 377 hectares between the Park and dependent sites, is one of the largest sites in the Mediterranean. It has a notable archaeological heritage, characterized by a large number of temples of imposing Doric architecture. The remains of the grandiose city, with its public and private buildings, show an advanced urban planning culture that defined the areas of the city with sophisticated planning developed by the Greeks from the moment of the foundation of the colony:

Acropolis, characterized by the large urban sanctuary on the southern part of the promontory and by the town divided into blocks 100 Doric feet 32 meters wide defined by main streets Plateiai and secondary streets Stenopoi. It is surrounded by imposing fortification walls from the Hellenistic-Punic era. Agora, north of the Acropolis, the political and social center of the city. Eastern Hill, characterized by the presence of another sanctuary with three monumental temples.

Gaggera, to the west, marked by the presence of the important Sanctuary of Demeter Malophoros, the Sanctuary of Zeus Meilichios, the Temple of Hera Matronale and the Temple M. Byzantine Baptistery, near the mouth of the Modione river, west of the Acropolis. The recent discovery of the artisan district with its numerous kilns further enriches the dense picture of archaeological findings. Added to this is an equally considerable landscape and naturalistic heritage.

The Park hosts several Italian and foreign missions that carry out systematic scientific research. There are numerous archaeological finds currently preserved in the Park, some of which are exhibited inside the Baglio Florio.

Remarkable are the remains of temple Y, evidence of the most ancient Doric architecture.
