Description
Tangkoko Batuangus Nature Reserve is a nature reserve in North Bitung District, Bitung City, North Sulawesi. This nature reserve covering an area of around 3,196 hectares is a sanctuary for Sulawesi black monkeys, tarsier, cuscus, maleo and hornbills. In this area there are two types of ecosystems, namely rain forests and moss forests. In the rainforest ecosystem grows banyan, cedar and nantu. Meanwhile, in the moss forest ecosystem, edelweiss flowers and pitcher plants grow. Geographically, this nature reserve is located between 125°3' -125°15' E and 1°30'-1°34' N. The topography varies from gentle to mountainous and from coastal forests, lowland forests, mountain forests and moss forests. This area has two mountain peaks, namely Tangkoko (1,109 meters above sea level) and Batuangus (450 meters above sea level). The average rainfall is 2,500 - 3,000 mm/ year with an average temperature of 20-25° C. The dry season occurs during April- November.[1] This nature reserve area is managed by the North Sulawesi Natural Resources Conservation Center. The wildlife in the Tangkoko area was widely known and was visited by Alfred Russel Wallace in 1861. In Tangkoko, Wallace collected specimens of babirusa and maleo which at that time were very easy to find. At that time, the black sand on Tangkoko beach was a place for nesting and hatching of maleo eggs. As a result of exploitation by local residents, maleo colonies on the Tangkoko coast were no longer found in 1915, and only a small number of colonies remained in the interior. The Tangkoko area was first designated by the Dutch East Indies Government as a protected forest in 1919 based on GB 21/2/1919 stbl. 90, and expanded in 1978 with the establishment of the Duasudara Nature Reserve (4,299 hectares) based on the Decree of the Minister of Agriculture No. 700/Kpts/Um/11/78.
