Highlights
Description
Imbros Gorge, situated in the picturesque province of Sfakia, is a highly popular destination among visitors to Crete. Boasting a length of 11 km, this magnificent gorge begins its journey from the charming village of Imbros, perched at an elevation of 700 meters above the sparkling sea. Initially, the gorge is wide and known as Porofarago or Porolagos. As you embark on your descent, prepare to be enthralled by the canyon's gradual transformation. The sidewalls gradually rise and narrow, creating a breathtaking spectacle of nature's artistry. Along the way, remnants of the old stone-paved trail, once a vital path connecting Sfakia to Chania, serve as reminders of the gorge's rich history. In fact, this very canyon witnessed several monumental battles between Ottomans and Christians during the Turkish occupation of Crete in 1821 and 1867.
Continuing on, you'll encounter a significant landmark called Airplane, named after a German WWII plane crash. However, the real highlight awaits you in the awe-inspiring Stenada section of the gorge. Brace yourself as the gorge walls narrow to just 1.6 meters apart, reaching an astonishing height of 300 meters! Admire the intricate formations etched by time into the rocks, creating a truly mesmerizing sight.
As you forge ahead, navigating through narrow passages, your journey culminates at the exit of the gorge near the village of Komitades. Take a moment to soak in the magnificent beauty that surrounds you, and appreciate the harmonious blend of natural wonders and historical significance that Imbros Gorge has to offer.
Sfakia, also known as Chora Sfakion, is our next destination on this journey. Located 73km southeast of Chania town, this charming village is home to approximately 2000 residents. It is situated amidst a captivating landscape filled with gorges and picturesque coastal villages. Among the notable villages in this area are Fragokastello, Kallikratis, Askifou, and Loutro. The Sfakia region boasts several gorges, including the famous Samaria gorge, which is traversed by the renowned E4 foothpath. If you're fortunate, you may even spot rare animals like vultures, eagles, and the wild Cretan goat known as kri-kri.
