Preveli, also known as Lake Preveli or Phoenix, is a picturesque beach located approximately 35km south of Rethymno and 10km east of Plakias in the beautiful south of Crete. With its stunning natural charm and popularity, Preveli attracts thousands of visitors every summer, making it one of the most famous beaches in the region.
Plakias village
Located on the southern coast of Rethymno, Plakias was once a small village in the early 1900s. However, over the years, it has experienced significant growth and has now become one of the largest cities in south Crete. In the 1960s, the beaches of Yialia were a popular destination for hippies. Today, Plakias is a thriving resort town and serves as a perfect base for exploring the natural wonders of the region.
Kourtaliotis gorge
The mesmerizing beauty of the Kourtaliotis Gorge in Crete is truly unparalleled. Spanning a length of 2.5 km, the gorge is home to the majestic Kourtaliotis river which meanders through its pathway. With its towering slopes reaching a staggering 600 meters in height, this biotope serves as a sanctuary for a variety of rare bird species, particularly the magnificent birds of prey that have found shelter in the caves lining its slopes.
