Proceed to visit the Catacombs of Kom El-Shokafa, the necropolis of 3 sub-levels dating from the 2nd century AD merges aspects of Egyptian, Greek, and Roman culture in its features. See the Roman triclinium, a banquet hall to honor the dead, as well as statues, reliefs, and a pillared lobby featuring depictions of Egyptian gods in Roman armor.

You will also drive by Pompay’s Pillar and stop for a photo stop, (it was constructed in honor of the Emperor Diocletian at the end of the 4th century).

Sultan Qaitbey built this picturesque fortress during the 14th century to defend Alexandria from the advances of the Ottoman Empire. His efforts were in vain since the Ottomans took control of Egypt in 1512, but the fortress has remained, strategically located on a thin arm of land that extends out into Alexandria’s harbor from the corniche.

The fortress’ current form is not the original. It was heavily damaged during the British bombardment of Alexandria during a nationalist uprising against British hegemony in 1882 and rebuilt around the turn of the 20th century.

Qaitbay Citadel Alexandria.

Stop At: Bibliotheca Alexandrina, El Shatby, Alexandria

Library of Alexandria (Bibliotheca Alexandrina), the biggest library in the world, now with 8 million books. Visit its open court where you can see the statue of Alexander the Great and the statue of Ptolemy the first, which was found underwater nearby.

Alexandria Library is closed on Friday and Saturday, so you can take photos from outside only.
