• Drive 22 km // 28 min to Asen’s Fortress

Continue your Bulgarian road trip into the impressive Rhodope Mountains and follow the winding road up to where you find Fortress of Asen standing on a rocky ridge. The Fort was built in the 6th century during the rule of the Byzantine Emperor Justinian the Great and the fort had an important strategic function during the Middle Ages. Ruined after the Ottoman conquest in the 14th century, only the authentic church survived, but you will enjoy the great panoramic view from the top.

• Drive 500 m // 2 min to Bachkovo Monastery

After your lunch our self guided tour to Plovdiv will take you to Bachkovo Monastery. Beautifully located in the Rhodope Mountains, it is situated in the valley of Chepelarska River. During the self drive tour to Bachkovo you will understand why this is one of the most important monasteries of the Bulgarian Orthodox Church. It conserves a huge number of very precious Icons, frescoes and paintings from the 11th to 14th centuries.
