Bhutan Tour: Thimphu, Punakha, Paro, Phobjikha(6N|7D)

Tour Overview

This Bhutan journey takes you through the country’s most stunning and culturally rich valleys — from the vibrant capital of Thimphu to the ancient capital Punakha, the serene Phobjikha Valley, and the sacred Paro Valley, home to the legendary Tiger’s Nest Monastery.

Each destination offers a perfect blend of spirituality, history, and breathtaking Himalayan scenery. Travelers will experience Bhutan’s unique traditions, explore its majestic dzongs (fortresses), visit ancient temples, and immerse themselves in the peaceful rhythm of rural life — a truly soul-enriching experience in the Land of the Thunder Dragon.

Thimphu – The Cultural Capital

Nestled in a scenic valley along the Wang Chhu River, Thimphu stands as Bhutan’s heart of culture, governance, and spirituality. Despite being the capital, it retains a strong sense of tradition and simplicity, with monks, farmers, and officials sharing the same streets.

During your Thimphu visit, explore the magnificent Buddha Dordenma, a 169-foot statue that overlooks the city and symbolizes peace and prosperity. Visit the Memorial Chorten, built in memory of the Third King, and the impressive Tashichho Dzong, which serves as the King’s office and the monastic body’s seat.

Discover Bhutanese art and traditions at the Folk Heritage Museum and Textile Museum, and visit the Motithang Takin Preserve to see Bhutan’s unique national animal. Wander through the Centenary Farmers’ Market to mingle with locals and shop for traditional crafts.

Thimphu beautifully blends the old and new — a place where spirituality meets modern living in perfect harmony.

Punakha – The Ancient Capital and Valley of Bliss

After crossing the scenic Dochula Pass (3,100m) — where 108 white stupas stand amid panoramic Himalayan views — descend into the lush and fertile Punakha Valley, Bhutan’s former winter capital.

The highlight here is the magnificent Punakha Dzong, the “Palace of Great Happiness,” majestically located at the confluence of the Pho Chhu and Mo Chhu rivers. This fortress is both an architectural masterpiece and an important spiritual site where royal weddings and major religious events take place.

Visit the Chimi Lhakhang (Temple of Fertility), dedicated to the Divine Madman, Lama Drukpa Kunley, after a short scenic walk through terraced rice fields.

For a touch of adventure, cross Bhutan’s longest suspension bridge, offering stunning views of the valley below, or hike to the Khamsum Yulley Namgyal Chorten, a hilltop stupa built to bring peace and harmony to the world.

Punakha is a serene and photogenic valley — where history, faith, and natural beauty come alive.

🏔 Phobjikha Valley – The Glacial Paradise

Traveling further east, you’ll reach the breathtaking Phobjikha Valley, one of Bhutan’s most stunning glacial valleys and the winter home of the rare Black-Necked Cranes.

Surrounded by pine forests, meadows, and traditional hamlets, Phobjikha offers an escape into untouched nature.

Visit the beautiful Gangtey Monastery (Gangtey Goemba), which stands on a ridge overlooking the entire valley. The monastery is a key center of the Nyingmapa school of Buddhism and radiates a serene spiritual energy.

Take a peaceful walk along the Gangtey Nature Trail, passing through villages, farmlands, and forested slopes, where prayer flags flutter in the wind. This region is perfect for birdwatching, photography, and quiet reflection.

Phobjikha’s calm environment and pure natural beauty make it one of Bhutan’s most enchanting destinations — a sanctuary for both wildlife and the human spirit.

Paro – The Gateway to the Dragon Kingdom

The Paro Valley is often described as the “Soul of Bhutan.” Rich in culture, history, and natural beauty, it is home to some of the nation’s most sacred and iconic sites.

The highlight of your journey is the legendary Paro Taktsang (Tiger’s Nest Monastery), dramatically perched on a cliff 900 meters above the valley floor. According to legend, Guru Padmasambhava meditated here after flying on the back of a tigress, bringing Buddhism to Bhutan. The hike to Tiger’s Nest is a spiritual and rewarding experience with breathtaking views throughout.

Other must-visit sites include the Rinpung Dzong (Paro Dzong) — an architectural masterpiece that hosts the annual Paro Tshechu festival — and the Ta Dzong (National Museum), which houses centuries-old artifacts, thangkas, and relics.

Visit Kyichu Lhakhang, one of the oldest temples in Bhutan built in the 7th century, and stroll through Paro town, where traditional Bhutanese charm blends with cozy cafés and handicraft shops.

The Paro Valley captures the true essence of Bhutan — serene, spiritual, and unforgettable.
