5-Day Bhutan Tour Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Paro and Transfer to Thimphu The tour begins with a meet and greet at Paro Airport, followed by a scenic 1.5-hour drive (54 km) to the capital city, Thimphu (altitude 2248 mts.). Along the way, there will be a stop at the historic Tachogang Lhakhang, known for Bhutan's first iron bridge. Upon arrival in Thimphu, lunch will be at a local restaurant. The afternoon is dedicated to exploring the city, starting with a visit to the vibrant Changyul area to experience local daily life and its proximity to major attractions like the National Memorial Chorten. Next, you will visit the Centenary Farm Market near the Wang Chhu River, the largest domestic market in Bhutan, especially lively on weekends. The day concludes with a stroll around the Thimphu Clock Tower and town, offering opportunities to explore local handicraft shops, followed by an evening view of the impressive Thimphu Dzong. Overnight stay is in Thimphu.

Day 2: Punakha Day Excursion Day two involves a 2.2-hour drive (77 km) for a day trip to Punakha (altitude 1200 mts.). The journey includes a stop at the scenic Dochula Pass (3,150 m), which offers a chance to see the Himalayan mountain ranges on a clear day. The first main activity in Punakha is a visit to Chimi Lhakhang, the revered Temple of Fertility, set on a hill with stunning rice field views. An optional activity is Mochu White Water Rafting on the Mo Chu River, a Class I & II experience that offers breathtaking views of the lush valley and the magnificent Dzong. The afternoon highlights include the majestic Punakha Dzong, built in 1637 and formerly the seat of the government, and crossing the Punakha Suspension Bridge, one of Bhutan's longest and most iconic, adorned with prayer flags. The day concludes with the drive back to Thimphu for the overnight stay.

Day 3: Thimphu Sightseeing and Drive to Paro The morning in Thimphu starts at Buddha Point to see the massive 54-meter tall Buddha Dordenma Statue, which offers panoramic views of the Thimphu Valley. An optional 2-hour short hike from Buddha Point to Changzangkha Lhakhang is also available. Next, you will visit Simply Bhutan, an immersive living museum and cultural center where visitors can try archery, wear traditional attire (Gho/Kira), and enjoy an Ara tasting. After an authentic Bhutanese lunch, the cultural exploration continues with a choice between the Royal Textile Museum (showcasing Bhutan's rich textile heritage) or the National Memorial Chorten. Later, you will visit the Mini Zoo & BBS tower to see the Takin (Bhutan’s national animal) Preserve and conclude the Thimphu sightseeing at the Craft Market (Bazar), an open-air bazaar showcasing traditional arts and crafts. Finally, you will drive 54 km (1.2 hours) to Paro (altitude 2200 mts.) for the overnight stay.

Day 4: Tiger's Nest Hike and Local Paro Sightseeing Day four is centered around the pilgrimage hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery (Paro Taktsang), a sacred site perched on a cliffside at 3,120 meters. The round trip hike takes approximately 4–6 hours and offers spiritually uplifting and physically rewarding views of the Paro Valley. Lunch will be enjoyed at a local restaurant or farmhouse. The afternoon is dedicated to relaxation and local exploration, starting with a tour and beer tasting at the Namgay Artisanal Brewery to learn about their craft beer process using local ingredients. This is followed by a relaxing and traditional Hot Stone Bath, known for its health benefits. The day wraps up with a stroll around Paro town for some shopping and photography before the overnight stay in Paro.

Day 5: Departure from Paro Airport The final day involves a drive to Paro Airport where an AVTT Representative will bid you farewell for your onward journey.
