Mirador de La Cumbrecita belongs to the system of sixteen viewpoints scattered across La Palma island, one of the Canary archipelago. Unlike the other fifteen ones, this viewpoint is not exactly made for stargazing but rather for astonishing the beholder with a fantastic panorama of the park around the large crater.
Situated in the central part of La Palma, Mirador de La Cumbrecita also happens to be in the middle of Caldera de Taburiente National Park. Caldera de Taburiente is a crater of more than 6 kilometers in diameter that formed in the result of erosion of nearby volcano. Now it's an impressive sight of steep slopes with pines growing on them, ideal for hiking of all levels of difficulty.
The mirador itself is a wonderful natural balcony that is located at the end of the narrow valley that is hovering over the edge of the crater. It is pushed behind the trees and has trails of the park running down from up there. From the viewpoint, you can see the streams of clouds that fill up the caldera and look like a milky ocean, as well as pine-covered rock walls surrounding the crater. The panorama is especially beautiful during the golden hours with the soft sunlight against rich green and grey-brownish slopes. That's why it's a perfect opportunity for the photographers and the living proof of La Palma's UNESCO Biosphere status.
Also, from here, Idafe Rock is visible. It's a stone pillar that is interesting due to its ancient age and legends connected to it. Aboriginal Guanche people believed that Idafe was the center of the Earth and if it crumbles, the world will fall down. To avoid it, they made regular animal sacrifices.
So, we strongly recommend visiting the Mirador de La Cumbrecita to witness the beauty and grandeur of Caldera de Taburiente and feel the awe of nature.
