The Flam Railway, also known as the Flåmbana or the Flåm Line, is the railroad in Norway which connects the fjord village of Flåm and Myrdal station, situated at the height of 867 m above the sea level. Thus, tourists are able to observe Norwegian picturesque landscapes at their finest, starting with mountains down to the valleys and hills. All of this has made the Flam Railway the third most popular tourist attraction in the country and was repeatedly called the most beautiful and scenic train trip in the world.

The Flam Railway is the branch of the Bergen Line, joining the cities of Bergen and Oslo. At Myrdal station, you can choose to switch trains and go to Flam from there. Aside from the magnificent window views the road offers, the railway itself can only be described as the wonder of engineering. It took almost 20 years for the road to be completed and opened to the public in 1940. It is also the world's steepest gauge railway, going at the gradient of 5.5%, meaning every 18 meters of its distance, the train continuously goes down one meter in height.

Construction of such a road was naturally bound to have a lot of technical difficulties, especially bearing in mind the fact that there was not very much developed technology to help. The end result, however, is a 20-km-long road which contains twenty tunnels, eighteen of which were dug out manually, the longest one (Blomheller Tunnel) being more than 1 km long.

The famous "little green" train is also equipped just right for such a daring journey: each carriage features five brakes so that any of the coaches could stop the whole train. Although the trip itself takes up no more than 50 minutes, it offers so much to witness that tourists often can't get enough of one trip. Quite frequently you can see people recommending which side of the train to sit on but the truth is - both expose you to equally breathtaking landscapes.

Over the course of the Flam Railway journey, you get to see snowy mountains, as well as hills and multiple lakes and rivers like Reinungvatnet lake and Flåmselvi river. Not only that, you have the chance to see the Flåmsdalen valley and waterfalls, including Kjosfossen and Rjoandefossen.

The main feature of the Flåm trip is the tourist stop at Kjosfossen waterfall where visitors can have a short break and take pictures of the waterfall. Also, there can be even Huldras waiting for them - the mythical sirens, seducing men by dancing near the waterfall! The final destination is Flåm, the village lying in the Aurlandsfjorden, a branch of Sognefjorden - the longest fjord in the world. Flåm has approximately 400 permanent residents and is a famous tourist resort. From here, you can take a special cruise to the fjords and see other villages like Flåm. So, don't miss the chance of seeing the most marvelous train journey in your life along the Flam Railway!
