La Geria village is a very small settlement on the southwest coast of Lanzarote, one of the islands, comprising the Canary archipelago. The island is unique due to its natural characteristics and holds the status of UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. In the meantime, La Geria is also claimed as the Protected area and famous for its wines! Being home to approximately 20 residents, La Geria is the part of the region also named La Geria.

The area is the leading wine-growing region that extends over 52 square kilometers over a few municipalities and villages like Uga and Masdache. Speaking about the peculiarity of wine growing and production in La Geria, here it is more than specific than anywhere. Having adopted the indigenous ways of farming, people cultivate vines in special pits called "gerias". These are the holes in the ground shaped like funnels and protected from the wind on one side by low stone walls, named "zocos". It may seem very surprising that vines are grown at all in such a dry climate and once a desert island, for a long time covered in lava from Timanfaya volcanoes. However, the fact of volcanoes' proximity to La Geria is precisely why it's possibly due to the lapilli, covering the soil. Lapilli, the rock emerged from the volcano as the result of eruptions, has the impressive capability of preserving humidity from the rain and overall atmosphere. Such vineyards contribute largely to the aesthetics of La Geria, reminiscing of the fabulous lunar landscapes which are impossible to forget once you've seen them.

Resting in the shade of red Timanfaya massif, right on the Wine Route, there are 13 functioning wineries in the area, the most important of which are La Geria, El Grifo and Rubicón. The primary sorts of local wine are Malvasia and Muscat ones. The Malvasia Canary was even praised by Shakespeare himself, and it is quite understandable since the wines have a golden shade to them and heavy fruit fragrance. Only 10% of those wines are actually exported to the continent, so it remains a very local delicacy, although largely popular and award-winning one.

Some wineries, here called "bodegas" are open to the public, so you can try the precious liquid yourself while enjoying the best views on Timanfaya National Park and other otherworldly landscapes. So, grab your things and step on Wine Route leading towards La Geria to drink some volcano wine and you will not be disappointed!
